BTW...

We have some friends in Eagle River who really celebrate Thanksgiving well. They both are descendants of pilgrims, and she is a direct descendant of Captain John Smith.

Sometimes we get together (not this year) and REALLY celebrate Thanksgiving.

I don't know if you guys know this, but I am Native American (Tlingit tribe, Raven clan), and my wife is British (born and raised in Bornemouth, England)...

What could be more in the spirit of Thanksgiving than English colonists getting together with Native Americans, under the direction of decedents of John Smith to eat WAY too much and play board games?

Anyway, I'm just checking in and have to get back to the family.

While I didn't necessarily hate the F strings, once again, you and I agree at least in general. I tried a couple times to really get into the F strings, and they just didn't work for me at all. I FAR prefer DR strings to F strings (no offense, F string fans!!). There's a couple other sets I wanna' try on the VF which I think will do well... MAYBE even better than DR on the VF, but at least as well anyway... we'll see. :)

i wasnt sold on the non jazz shape at first, but the sound is making up for it. i really tried to get those lm5's sounding like the fender and it just wasnt hitting the mark. i even had jimmy put a set of my own dr's on that 11 pound one he had. the light ones werent close and the heavy one was still too dark and didnt have enough snap. this f is just really even all over the board. this narrower neck is working for me too. score.

If you want a really vintage tone out of that bass, you will have to try an all steel bridge (Fender bent plate style) in a narrower spacing(?). It will be more open, brighter and faster response.

I am currently "loading" the rosewood/alder VFs with DR nickel lights, 40 to 100, and a 125, either Low Riders (brighter) or Sunbeams.
The ash/maple VF get DR Marcus Miller 45 to 105 and a 125.
The F Bass strings are too loose for this model and cause too many false harmonics and overtones.

im pretty happy with the tone on this thing at this point! i just wish the finish was a little harder. ive already got some love marks on it.:D

Regarding the three basses in the photo (post #982, page 50 of part 4):

BNF5 cherry burst, BN5 magenta and black ceruse (22 frets)
Studio Model, black finish, (20 frets, no curlycue on the bottom of the body)

Regarding the two BN4s in the photo (post #988, page 50 of part 4):
The Cocobolo one has 22 frets, 34" scale.
The trans red has 21 frets, 34.5" scale. There's more distance between the end of the fretboard and the neck pickup.

subscribed. These F-bass club threads sometimes make me want to sell all of my other great basses and just have F's.
I have posted this before but here is my GFC L5 (George Furlanetto Custom). I hunted high and low for this bass till I finally got it.

Logos? Well, that stopped me in my tracks! I'll keep an eye out. Actually, I already put that other one on my Christmas wish list with my wife, so I'll have to ask her to hold up on that if she hasn't already acted.

Wow, yet another reason to give the DRs a go on my alder & rosewood VF5 I guess! Thanks.
