Club Fbass (thread 13)

My BN5 is currently loaded up with SIT Power Wounded which are exposed on the high 3 and have a recessed thin wrap on the E and B at the bridge before the full wrap starts. I like how they handle though they aren’t “perfect” so I still have my ears and eyes peeled.

In my experience wrapped B strings sound better than exposed core B strings and according to a very extensive discussion of the subject here on TB several years ago it’s because the B string benefits from having more mass pushing down on the bridge saddle which can have a positive effect on how the string vibrates, less “ warble “, but I’m sure a million people will chime in saying the opposite 😀 , my supplied open core strings that were on my BN5 lasted about a week before I replaced them with standard wrapped varieties.
Opposite. Strong opposite. Lol

The exposed core B has a note envelope similar to the other strings. I find fully-wound B’s to just kinda “splat”.

Pics or…

Finally here! I’m happy to add this bass vi to my arsenal. It’s been years of eyeing them and considering other builders. Once F Bass announced these I knew I’d get one, and I think I made the right choice. It is what I expected from an F Bass instrument.

Lighting in my place always seems to be brutal between the harsh overheads and the yellow reflecting from the floor. The walnut is darker than it looks in my pics. Some interesting grain on the bass side, and a little plain on the treble side. I had my fingers crossed for a book match, but I got what I got. The surface finish is perfect to the touch.

The headstock is lovely. The cavity cover on the back is excellent. The tuning machines felt a little stiff compared to what I’m used to on a full bass, but I’m sure they aren’t geared like bass machines and they don’t have huge lollipop surfaces to grab.

A quick test through my SansAmp BDDI V2 sounded good in the setting I had it at last time I used it, and pretty nice bypassed. The neck feels good. My fingers need some time to adjust to the spacing. I was getting a little buzz on the thinner strings and higher frets, but I think that’s an issue with my grip strength/pressure on the thin strings. Hopefully I’ll get some callouses built up shortly.

I have no idea what to play on this or where to start with the settings. I can definitely see why single coils and bass cut switches are desirable on a bass vi.

Now, I’m gonna plug this in to some effects. I’ve been holding a few distortion and fuzz pedals until this arrived so I could see how they work together.

Six months of waiting went pretty fast, but it was still six months. I’m not sure how I could manage a 24 month wait for the other models.

It’s weight biased to the body side. I play seated and I think I need a strap for balance and extra security. That walnut body is a bit much for the smaller headstock and shorter neck.

Plugged into delay and reverb it’s giving me what I wanted. This will definitely work for my ambient noodling ideas. I just need to remember that goofy tuning between the G and B strings :)

Sorry to keep posting, but any transparent seafoam green BN5s out there that someone would be willing to part with? I’m in the market! Thanks

Thank you so much! I actually purchased a different BN5 but this is a great deal on a beautiful bass. Someone is going to be very happy.

No kidding. I’ve wanted a seafoam/maple BN5 for a while. Now is not the time for one though.
…I hate to say it but the gold saddles on the chrome bridge are not a look I’d opt for, but that’s a pretty minor issue, and probably one I’d overlook.
I honestly didn't notice them until you said something, so obviously doesn't bother me

I’m impressed with the Lollar pickups on the Bass VI. I find myself favoring the middle single, and using the bass cut. There’s no real hum or noise I can detect so far, though it’s not a humbucking pickup. The bridge is a bit hotter than I expected but still has a lot of range to it. It’s just not as snappy and twangy as I thought it might be. The neck is round and lovely and feels like a bass pickup. Not a classic P sound, but still bass-like. I kinda wonder if sonically I’d like a H in the neck and S and S in the middle and bridge. If I had been able to play this first in various configurations, I might’ve opted for the HSS configuration, but I’m quite pleased with the HSH and I wanted to be certain I had humbucking options for using dirt + delay + reverb.

For those that have had/tried both a maple and ebony fingerboard on a maple neck, is it possible to use eq, compression, or any other tricks to get the tones to sound similar? I can definitely hear a difference in demos, but I was just wondering if those differences can be compensated for with eq?

I feel the eq does what you are asking between ebony and maple boards on the F maple neck. I’m judging between a BN5 (maple board) and 2 BNF5 (ebony). Yes fretless but the overall tone still punches and the eq does its job.
