Question: I've got a new-to-me 2009 BN5. Love the tone, but as compared to my other basses (both active and passive) the output is quite low. I need to boost my preamps gain about 25% as compared to my other basses to achieve a comparable volume. The battery is new, and the pickups are about 1/4" below the strings.
Is it typical for BN basses to have a relatively weak output, compared with other basses, or is something wrong or different with my pickups?
I know what you mean. I left the Fbass fold for a minute before I realized it was a mistake. I've had my current BN5 since 2003 and I'll never get rid if it. It's the best bass I've ever laid hands on. Other than changing the finish "formula", I wasn't aware of any changes to the BN's(?).Hey guys, I'm wondering if anyone here has any leads for me.
I'm looking to unload my VERY very nice Skjold LP and go back to F bass land. I just miss the BN vibe too much, it was home for me for a long time. I've been entertaining trades, but I'm pretty particular, and have realized that I'm really after a pre-2003 BN6 or BN5. I just like the tone and neck shape of the older basses better, for whatever reason. They are hard to find though.
Anyone interested in selling a BN6/BN5 from this era?
Anyone interested in trading for this bass?
lemme know and thanks for any help!
The only difference in the 3 BN5's (all pre 2004) I had was the weight. They got progressively heavier. To me, the tone got more focused and gritty. The one I have now is about 10.5 lbs. I think George now shoots for around 10 lbs, but, I'm not sure that's always been the case.
I liked my BN6 so much, I decided I wanted a second FBass. I've initiated a new VF6-PJ Fretless. My BN6 was about 11 pounds. Tonally it was smooth and rich with just enough mids to fill out the ash/maple dip but not so much as to be bulky. My '06 BN5 was very different sounding. Was always fighting the bloated feeling mids and the larger neck. I dont mind the weight, as they're so comfortable, its really the neck feel and the tone that I'm looking at. With the boost only pre, the midrange character being balanced is really important to me.

Was your '06 lighter?
Huh. I use TI Jazz flats on other basses, but I've never put them on a BN. Hmm... thanks for the heads up.I recently installed a set of TI flats on my BN5 and I've been pleasantly surprised with the results. Anyone else have experience with flats on their F's?
For what it's worth, I've found that the TI's do a great job of tempering the natural brightness of the ash/maple construction, while still giving a full range sound. I even dig the slap tone.
EXACTLY what I'm doing with one of my AC6s, and I completely concur! When I still had my AC6 I used TI flats on it, mainly to create more of a tonal difference to my AC5 with F Bass strings.
The TI's worked very well with no bridge adjustment needed.
The tension on the 34.5" scale was notably different to the same strings on a 34" scale. They were perfect!
Hello! Proud owner of this BN5, birdseye maple fretboard, three piece maple neck, cocobolo top, cocobolo
block inlays and ash body. May I have a number?

Well said!Holy crud that's gonna be amazing.
Really interested to see how the 6 string P pickup sounds compared to a 4 (or 5). Well I'M interested, my wife/wallet may have another perspective![]()
Popping in to say hello and see what's new. If I could get a BN5 9lbs, I would be back on board. I just cannot handle 10 lb basses on my shoulder and back anymore. My back gets too sore. Tonally, playability. Fbasses will always be special and exceptional.
It's official. I've finalized the specs and sent a down payment.

34.5" Scale

I wanted a chrome pickup cover over the P-pickup but Marcel advised there are no covers large enough for a 6-string.
Also I inquired about a splittable humbucker in the bridge position. Marcel said they/Aguilar don't offer a splittable humbucker at this time. They are considering one by the fall, but they're planning it for the BN/BNF models.
I originally asked for 35" but 34.5" was a recommendation of Marcel. I've copied his comments here: "34.5” scale (strongly recommended for good balance from B to C…we don’t offer 35” scale as we aren’t fans of how thin sounding the C string becomes)"How come you went for 34.5" scale VF?
