This was a new old stock bass, so no mods have been done to the bass. The dealer bought it in 2009.

And while there were some 70's J's made with alder, the most popular 70's J tone we all know and love is based on an ash body, so I think you're gonna' love that bass in a big way.
On Sadowsky's site, the ash body is more expensive than the alder on a UV70 (but only about $75 more).
I always heard that both ash and alder were pretty cheap, common woods which is why Fender used them in the beginning.

For me, that head did not have enough mid-presence, and in a live mix, I couldn't hear the rounds on my MV5 like I wanted to.
When you can't hear the rounds on an ash/maple Sadowsky, well, that ain't for me.

I'm going to put some flats on this, but I'd like to try something other than TI's and Chromes. How are the Sadowsky flats?
My main rig is a Ampeg Heritage SVT running through an Aguilar DB410 cab. I'm thinking it will sound pretty good...

I love the Sadowsky flats, great tone, great feel and the right tension. do yourself a favor and try them.
I am about to contact Kevin today to place my order for a new NYC bass and thought I would ask all you Sadowsky experts for your comments on my options.
I have some Sadowsky experience having owned a metro RV4 in 59 'burst which made way for my current 59 'burst NYC RV4 with ash body (fantastic bass!). I recently tried a UV70 ash/maple 4 but I prefer the size of the smaller regular Sadowsky body so I am putting together a spec to do what I hoped the UV70 would do.
My plan is to use my RV4 with older strings (or maybe even flats) and go for a mellow sound and have a second Sadowsky that is brighter and more 'Marcus'!
I don't need two basses to do this but I just want two basses if you know what I mean!!
I am therefore looking at a spec either based on an ash/maple MV4 or even a Will Lee.
The mid boost sounds like it might be a nice option on the Will Lee but I was wondering if the 70's position single coils I could spec on an MV4 might get me closer to that Marcus 70s J Bass sound.
I am not too worried about the extra fret on the Will Lee and I am certain that the neck profile either way is just something to get used to with time playing the bass.
Any comments would be much appreciated.

The mid boost is a very nice option; I use it about half the time. But it doesn't add brightness. Just the opposite. I use it when I want to "force my way" thru a mix.
Depending on where you set the volume of the mid boost, it's effect is that of lessening the highs and lows and kicking up the mids.
Think of it like a reverse smiley face.
I think the maple fretboard will be the biggest ingredient for more brightness.

A standard ash/maple Vintage will serve you very well here. I would actually stick with the stock 60's pickup position. That ash/maple/60's position 'classic' Sadowsky spec (with the HC's if you want it a bit more scooped and a bit more sizzly up top, or the SC's if you want a bit more punch and grind) makes for a great, modern, goosed J Bass tone. It won't be the classic Marcus 'Fender with a pre' sort of thing exactly, but I find it a great modern J bass spec, with a superb slap tone.
