I already have a US Glaub that I use for the heavy lows, but this J will be for the slightly brighter side when needed.
Since we are talking PUs.....my MV4 which is a fairly new bass, I find has a bit more middle to it than my other Sadowsky basses. Could it be just the Swamp Ash/Maple neck combo? And it has a mid frequency I just can't get rid of. The bass sounds great, but if I can figure out how to axe that mid tone I am hearing, would be even better (my amps have very simple EQ setups). You can really hear the difference when you A/B it against my "SWR" bass which is Swamp Ash and Morado.
So you think SC PUs would help that?

I'll be "that guy"....I'd stay with HC's.
I play a multitude of styles and HC's work (for me) awesome in every context.
I had SC's in my ash/maple NYC and went to HC's just a few months back.
Love them.

hey quick question, guys and gals...anybody knows (or if you have nothing else to do, can measure) the diameter of the sadowsky bass knob? also do you know the shaft size? found the chrome alternative to the standard knob (with the line), was thinking of ordering some for my soon to be completed build.
Anyone other than Ken have a clip of this awesome spec / string combo? Nobody's backing this up.. I am seriously curious to hear it.( & by that I mean some fingers). Thanks bros.

I just listened to all the clips repeatedly as objectively as possible on my mac thru an Apogee Duet interface into Sennheiser HD 600 hd ph w/ Cardas harness @ volume.
I now understand what has been said about HC pups being a tad scooped relative to SC, whose mids are more noticeable due to a slight lack in low frequency extension.
This is all quite relevant in critical listening environment but in a mix at performance volume I'll still put my money on HC.
We are, after all playing MUSIC w/ our basses & a lot of what is debated about HC vs SC is based on a subjective appraisal while listening critically outside of the musical context.
I have come to realize, after spending time with my new bass, that the judicious application of the Sadowsky bass preamp, VTC, & pup blending is FAR more impressive than the differences that I am able to hear between these pup types - IMO.

Those little nuances are only noticiable for the player, and never for the audience. But whatever make us play better and love our tone a bit more is a good thing.
When you put the instrument through a preamp , amp, DI or other processors the differences are even smaller.

Having heavily gigged two Sadowsky J's with HC's and eventually with SC's, I have to pretty much totally disagree with this. I noticed a huge difference.
Does the typical audience member notice anything.... that's kind of a red herring, and I surely don't base my gear choices or practice routine based on that criterion.
I would assume that an equal number will prefer the HC's and the SC's... two flavors of good. However, the differences are quite pronounced, especially in a mix and interacting with backline and player technique, and IMO in no way can be mimic'd nor covered up by preamp settings or pickup blending. The bass even 'feels' different.

I agree with Ken here....
I disliked the HC's to the point where I nearly sold my RV5JJ before trying the SC's in it, cause it flat out wasn't gonna work for me.
It was having a hard time keeping up with some of the mixes, and I'd bet that the audience might, in fact, notice that...

Well, I placed my order yesterday and went for:
MV4 ash/maple
Natural finish body (possibly non chambered so there will be no join line)
black pickguard
Vintage tint neck, maple fingerboard w/pearl blocks
D Tuner
single coils in 70's position
Should be a beauty (aren't they all) and a nice contrast to my other bass with rosewood and 60's position HC's
