I was wondering with the preamp bypassed, how close does it come to a traditional P bass sound?

I own a Metro PJ, and I think the P is in the same location as a straight P. I've also owned/played NYC PJs with both the newer and older style P5 pickups. So if that counts...

I'm not an absolute expert on P tone, but it sounds pretty darn close to me. I'd say the newer pickups might have a little more edge than a traditional Fender P, but all the woody fat powerful classic tone is also still there (IMHO), and probably only an absolute expert stickler would be able to pick it out in music and say "wait a sec...". That said, I LIKE that extra edge, so it's a plus for me anyway.

Definitely close enough for me!!

I bought my Metro pj as a substitute for my fender p and in my opinion they are different, but having said that, it is a great bass. If you decide to get it you won't regret it.
