Club Sadowsky!!!

Fun day at Rogers shop today (like a kid in a candy store) and hanging with Kevin and the gang.

Out of all the basses they had there, I left thinking about the NYC P-Basses the most. Man those things are off the hook!

I think that might be my first NYC build... a Vintiquity Nitro NYC P-Bass. The checking is something that needs to be seen in person.

Oh yeah, and my car got towed courtesy of the NYPD. Had to pay $185 to get it out of the NYC Auto Pound. Completely my fault... friggin signs are not easy to understand. Oh well... Overall experience - priceless.

I think it'd be interesting to have a sadowsky with a single control that was a "mid cut", which would boost bass and treble in lockstep while reducing the volume. That always sounds good on sadowskys but it can be hard to get your level just right to hit your comp the way you want, etc ... when I want a scoop I always grab the stacked EQ knobs together and twist in the scoop, then back off the lows a little and pull back the volume to get back to unity. That's what gives that signature broad band 300hz centered cut.

Man, when I use eq on either of my JJ's, it's:
20% treble boost
VTC cut
bass boost on bridge pickup only.

On the PJ, right now, at home playing along with a really loud stereo, I've got treb and bass both about +40% and VTC at about 70%.
Pretty counter-intuitive (to me!) since the P pup seemed fat enough without any of that.

Production note:
the pickguard was well worn, so I spent about 10 minutes on it with a buffer earlier.
I have after picks, and a naked PJ pick I'll post up sometime.

I'm not sure what you've done but - HELLO!!! Try it ALL @ the gig. That's a great start bubba.
I find that if you turn down the front end on the amp, use the master & set the amp flat you should be fine even @ 50% bass boost on the PJ. Make sure you use pad input on the amp. I'm not saying set & forget. Just for an appropriate tune. Trust how you feel it would fit. I think slight to moderate bass boost for a root/5 is in order. Remember what we talked about awhile ago about Roger's preamp tightening up the bass out front when boosted a bit. If you're concerned about driver protection, you could always think about a touch of compression. Not a bad investment if you can find one you like. But I don't think it's a concern - really. What is your rig plans w/ the PJ?
AND speaking of paying good money for you to turn waaaaaay down, :), I would pay good money, (like I'll ever have any of it), to fly down there this weekend & hide that JJ. I hope you understand that a full gig report on this is not an option.:bassist:

Good post. For the life of me I can't dial in the "hitting the comp right" thing. It's a problem for me when boosting & backing off EQ on the preamp or panning the pups. Any tips? Thanks.

It's hard, I use the gain reduction light on my comp, or my ears. I don't do it often with the band because it is a little twitchy to get right.

I still need to de-gloss the neck and clean the hardware.

And gig the daylghts out of it.

It's wearing DA Pro-Steels right now, and they're ok enough.
I think I have Sadowsky Blue Nickle and Blue Steel both on hand.

Just have to say my Sadowsky MV4 absolutely kills! I've had it for about 8 months and it's getting nicely worked in now. Had a rehearsal last night and just completely tore it up! This bass is perfect for me. It just feels natural in my hands and the tone just blows me away every time I play it!
Why did I not get one of these years ago?
Oh well, live and learn.
Now I just want to get a matching fretless!

Yeah, last year I was also introduced to the special charms of a truly premium P bass. It's a whole new ballgame compared to even the best Fender (IMHO!!).

Depending on your budget, you can do that with a Will Lee model. Set up the sound so it's more "nominal" with the mid boost engaged, and then toggle the switch to (essentially) cut the mids. Worked pretty well, actually.

This is not to say the PJ is "an acceptable JJ substitute," but, I have a better understanding of what it is, and what it does, and, it's good.

Well done! Who woulda thunk it. :D
I would have never expected it to be a replacement for your preference but now perhaps you will find some eager anticipation of playing each knowing that you don't have to try to find satisfaction with the "new one". I'm so pleased for you. I only hope it keeps getting better in comfort level.
