Well, I think it's a bad idea to deliberately relic a collectible/historical artifact... say, a vintage Fender that's been kept in its case for decades.

Aside from that edge case, there's no reason not to offer relic basses. It's just* cosmetic. Some folks prefer trans finishes, but I'm not aware of them protesting paint. The relic process may offend your sensibilities (not that there's anything wrong with that :p), but it doesn't affect your choices: you can still order a perfectly pristine bass from Roger. It's simple, if you don't like relics, then don't buy one. I'm delighted Roger's offering them, not just because I like them, but because it fills a demand, and any product that can keep Sadowsky & Co. sailing smoothly through the recovering economy is fine with me. Except six+ string basses, those are a crime against nature. :scowl: :D :D

Edit: mostly cosmetic. I love stripped necks!

OMGOSH agreed!!! But not on topic... thankfully! :)

Also, to clarify my position... I do not hold ANY vendor at "fault" for offering it... and especially Roger. They're just doing what any smart business should do... offer what their customers want, and do it as well or better than anyone else offering it. Roger does this... as he always does. Serve the customer, and do it as well or better than anyone else. You work with anyone on the Sadowsky team and I challenge you not to feel like royalty. Seriously.

My criticism is with the notion itself... not the (intelligent) choice of serving customer demand.

Also, make no mistake... I have no delusions of convincing someone else to change their choices/preferences... this is not a campaign for a change... *shudder*... if they're into relicking, I'm assuming they'll still be into relicking despite my opinion on the matter, and I'm TOTALLY cool with that.

I'm just doing the web forum thing here... voicing an opinion. :)

Just to make sure I'm understood properly here. :)

I respect all of your opinions, Vic, including this one! Just a fun disagreement, is all.

For me, a Sadowsky Vintiquity will have to wait until next year at least. That might give me enough time to finalize the specs!

I have a Fender Relic Nocaster and it's the most resonant Tele I've ever played. It looks pretty beat up. I think Fender CS relics just sound better.

On the other hand, I've had a couple relic'd Nash J basses and while they felt good, notes just didn't come to life and they just looked overly distressed.

I prefer the "closet classic" look of a worn bass.

I look after my basses and am always careful to prevent dings and scrapes at gigs or rehearsals. As a result my Sadowsky basses will never look as used and worn as the Vintiquity ones.
Having said that, I just love the look of a bass that looks well used so I would love to own a Vintiqiuity Sadowsky. There are plenty of relic'd instruments about but I bet that none would be as good to play, or sound as good, or be as well built, or as tastefully aged as a Sadowsky.

Bass brothers, I had the opportunity to stop by Sadowsky's shop yesterday while I was visiting NYC during my Spring Break. I had Roger sign my bass, and got to meet Lisa Hahn, who basically built it. I tried a couple of basses while I was there, but didn't get to check out the PJ5 that I really wanted to play (I was with a friend, and time was of the essence). All I can say is what you already know--Sadowsky basses are top notch quality and play and sound incredible. Of all the basses I've had over the years, the Sadowsky is the easiest to setup and has had the least amount of issues. Roger was a super nice guy and I was fortunate to get a chance to see the shop. One day I hope I'll own another Sadowsky. I have a bass or two I could sell, but even if I did it would be less than the cost of a new Sadowsky the way I'd like to order it. My Kinal bass is my other favorite, but like I said the Sadowsky has had the fewest issues and modifications.

Two years ago, we changed our tuners from having a press fit headstock bushing to having a top nut. Now we have switched again to Hipshot Ultralites with a 1/2" diameter string post. We are using a steel post on the 4 string sets to give us the extra mass we like. On the 5 strings, we have moved from a 3/8" to a 1/2" post and the 5 string sets have aluminum posts.

Always tweaking and fine tuning.....

Wait, I don't know an inch from a hole in the ground, but that sounds like you've moved to wider posts on the 5 strings. Am I right?

If so, then that's fantabulous news. I remember saying many pages back that the post size on the 5vers was a little anaemic-looking against the size of the headstock (and iirc, being shot down a lot over it. Heee). Now I guess I'll have to go check out the in-stock page to admire the new size.

You're going to really LOVE this 100T. I'm always in the 25W setting since I don't gig...yet. One of the guys at my new employer has a studio in his basement...I've heard that I will be requested to jam soon. :hyper::bassist:
