After years with an Squier JV poor men Sadowsky finally my first 5string to struggle with:

I´m looking forward to add an VTC and to change the pickguard to tortoise to have a look like this:

And I´m thinking about changing the volume pot from 250k to 500k. In this comparision you hear, how it opens up and refreshes the sound, somehow more alive. Or what do you "think" (hear)?

If the weather ever cooperates I'll be able to get the sax player out to finish it. At least it gets the idea across for how the bass sits in the mix. It's chambered ash pauferro fb, stock sadowsky hc pups.

Hey All,
Question for Metro HPJ owners....I love mine and it's not going anywhere, but since I set the pickups full on in the neck P position most of the time, I notice that it lacks some of the grunt and punch compared to other P basses I've owned. Why is that? Would I get more of the Fendery grunt from the P pickup if I drop in a Fender custom shop or SD quarter pounder in the P position? Has anybody tried that?

Assuming you have the Nordstrand VP5 in there, that P pickup is a bit 'wider, brighter and more airy' than a classic P pickup to my ears (I have a Nordy with that pickup). Love it (kind of like a PJ type tone actually), but again, the extended low end and top end result in a bit of a different vibe than a classic P pickup. I find it an improvement (i.e., sounds like a P, but 'moderned up' a bit). I can understand completely that those who are looking for an old school P tone might not be impressed though!

That was a long winded way of saying, yes, a pickup swap might get you a bit closer to what you are looking for. Not sure which would be best though. The new Aguilar P is getting a lot of love at the moment, but not sure how 'vintage it sounds'.

'57 pups are my favorites for that "grunt and punch". I haven't dropped them into any of my Sadowsky's, but with the quick change allowed by the terminal connection posts, swapping pups are easypeasy.

I also like the Seymour Duncan, Antiquity for precision bass raised A pickups as well.
The Duncan's, usually street at $110.

I use the raised 'A' pole, pups in several of my basses.

Give 'em a try, if you don't like them simply sell the pups off.

Hard for me to wrap my head around changing pickups in my MV4 HPJ. For some reason I had it in my head that the stock pickups were part of the Sadowsky magic and weren't to be messed with. That being said, I really like the SD SPB-1 pickups in my Fender P. I think I am going to do a swap and see how it sounds.

Heck, now I might even readily admit that I have Chromes on the Sad.

My MV5 P/J came with the Nordie's in it. For whatever reason the j pickup was so much louder than the P pup. I took the J pup down as far as I could and still had the same problem, I figured futher away from the strings would help.... Ummm, no. I was lucky enough to talk to a well known country bassist and he preferred the Seymour Duncan wound Sadowsky P/J pups. I ordered a set of the SD's and am totally happy with the sound/tone. Nice and full, yet super tight!! Sounds amazing with the Aguilar DB750/GS 212.
