So can any Modern 4-24 (or 5-24 for that matter) owners comment on tonal differences between the soap bars as the PJ setup? Have to admit I'm eyeing one as a counterpoint to my Fodera w/EMG PJ (which sounds different than the Sadowsky PJ I had). I"m not a JJ guy and I really like mid-forward sound. Most guys seem to compare the 4-24 to Smith which isn't bad sonically in my book.

I also use a PJ5 in a modern country band, great choice. I use a Streamliner into a 2155cf Xsonics or a 810e. Mostly the 2155 though, great, deep tight lows. Tully, from Jason Aldean, uses the same bass through Aguilar gear. As far as strings... I went though several and keep going with the stock Sadowsky Blue Steel - they just sound good on that bass.

To me it is fairly similar to the closer spaced coils of a PJ. Like "reverse P" on the low strings. Its got more punch and snap than a smith.

imho, not at all. the p sound is a totally different thing, and you really just need a p pickup to get that sound. the diff between a p and a j is way way different than just boosting a mid freq.

I would say "sort of". Depends on that you mean. Theres a specific P thing that only a P will do, but just a small wide boost at 500 moves the single coil JJ in that direction a little. My RV5-WL with the boost on, a very small equal boost on high and low, either 50/50 or a little blend toward the neck, and a good dose of VTC cut ... Its a big sound. And doing it onboard changes the way your compressor deals with the signal. I love this bass.

I even like the boost for slap, i just turn it off for pick or for that classic sadowsky big'n'low finger sound.
