Once again TB didn't send me the update messages.
Just yesterday I gave a good spa treatment to my PJ4: cleaned the electronics, new battery, a good polish and new strings...wait, no new strings, these Sadowsky flats still sound great after almost two years on the bass. And since there has been some chatting about natural/black/maple basses, here it goes me and my baby:

I Sold my CAR NYC PJ5 last week.
I lucked out and got a nice deal on another one from a friend in Nashville.. Its lighter in weight than my CAR (this one is 8.2 pounds) and it has a killin' Brazilian RW fingerboard... Figured that i would share this with you all. This bass has some history too... Plays great...

Yes... Its a nice one too.. .He said said he is digging my old CAR one...I was not going to get another one... Was thinking of jj.... Then i was looking on CL.. and saw this...emailed the guy not knowing it was Tully and that he bought mine... HAhah He said Doood call me.. hahah

I will want to speak with him before i quote anything... But From when we talked i knew it was a good recording bass... Heading to a session with it right now thru Friday.. spin the wheels... then some gigs in Austin and up to Illinois... .we're doing some gigs up there with Wishbone Ash, Savoy Brown, Elvin Bishop I LOVE Elvin!!!
The Brazilian FB is real nice and chocolaty not as dark as some of the dalbergia that i have on my other basses. but really nice swirl and i like the feel of it.. satin-like and smooth... ....Never thought that i would like Black on Black.. but it works great!.And it has the Duncan P5 that i had on my CAR which really sounds great.....

OK, I've had the MV-PJ for a couple weeks now, and we've bonded! I love how it plays, and even though I'm not a Huge P-Bass fan, this bass sounds AWESOME! So I've lined up a Metro Vintage Jazz 5 to round out the Stable. I'll post pics once the other bass arrives. I'll probably be posting a lot of my other basses up for sale soon.

Yeah.. At first, a PJ takes some getting used to.. But there is a whole lot of sound to be had by them.. And it can cover allot of genres.
I like how well a P bass records in rock music and modern country... This PJ5 and my Alleva Coppolo LG5 has all basses covered.. And my Alleva kbp4, its about all i need. A Fret-less of course, and my EUB.. but really the NYC PJ5 and my LG5 nail it

For me the PJ thing was love, like, and then sell. I loved it initially, but eventually, I just (again) started missing my full J-style basses. That Metro PJ5 I had was absolutely phenomenal... best PJ I've ever touched or heard, but I'm a J bass guy. As awesome as that bass was, with my current two J/J's, I don't miss it at all.

In the end, good to know what works for you though.
For someone like Kirk or Tully, maybe they need tools like that for session work/specific projects.
As I pretty much ''only need to please me," I'm pretty solid sticking to the JJ5 thing.

I see what you did there... cute... lol.
Yah, I can imagine. Man I have so much respect for the P sound, especially through a more classic style rig, but I could just never get behind it myself... probably a lot has to do with the rigs I like to use too. Weird... I love the tone when I hear it in other bands, but every time I've tried to own one, I just miss the J... even if the music would generally call for a P. Oh well.

I understand the Love for JJ basses ... I love them too.. Thats the reason i like my LG5 and 4... Closest thing to a vintage fender ever... ... for me, a JJ is great Especially if im doing a POP or dance gig..or some singer songwriter stuff.. The JJ works wonders.. as does a musicman style At least for me they do. I don't know about everyone else..
But for Rock and Country ,the P-tone stays out of the way of most guitars sounds, it remains thick yet more vocal mids..`.
For me, P's can get that modern rock thing that all the kids are doing today... to classic rock like Ozzy to bonjovi to Iron Maiden. Ahhaha... to vintage Stevie wonder and Lionel Ritchie.. HA.. And the P does Motown so well... I never get a call to do punk.. but a P does that so well too... I find a JJ will get lost in some of those situations.. I just use what they guy that pays me wants me to use. and most of the time the P bass style gets two thumbs up for some reason..

I used the Black NYC today on a project..Finish it up next week... It sounded great.. . A little weirdness on the "E" string on the P5 Duncan though.. On the 6 POLE coil, The "E" string is lower in VOL..Using the ALLEN key test method, we noticed the "E" string magnet doesn't have as much pull as the other strings It sits between the other "A" and "B" sting magnets ..... Dialing in the J pickup evened out the discrepancy .. I may send it to Coppolo to re magnetize. .don't know yet..

The funny thing was.. The FEDEX guy that delivered my bass was TOASTED... My whole front yard , including the bass shipping box smelled like it was on a cross country trip in Cheech and Chongs van! ..... i don't partake in that but if people want to. Its cool.. .. To me its pretty funny... He came to the door,and it was almost like a cloud of smoke surrounding him. The Box still smells skunky HA
Hi: I've got both, a early 2000ish Standard NYC Jazz 4 with single coils and a
Metro P/J hybrid. Depends on the venue. For my cowboy music, the metro always
gets the call, but for rock the Jazz. I tend to keep new strings on the Jazz, which
also comes into play
Now, if I could only find an old NYC four banger
with EMG's or later soapbars, I would be set for life
