Hmmm this is true. I had thought about parchment as well. Assuming I can even get a replacement guard for a Will Lee 5(I didn't see one on the site). The body is actually transparent black over swamp ash, so it doesn't look jet black in person.

I got one for my black Will Lee (metro) once they had one available (just have to email them. I went with the tort. Although I have since sold the bass, here is some comparison shots for you.
That's a really nice bass. Congrats.
IME/O, black with maple basses are a little challenging regarding the pickguard. They already have so much contrast going on that it almost seems any pickguard at all looks out of place. I am normally a big tort fan; but the black/maple bass I owned had a black guard and I just stayed with that. FWIW
I always wondered how many fretless Sadowskys were/are in the wild. Almost never hear about or see one.
I wonder why that is. Maybe due to preamp voicing?
Agreed. When I got my black/black/maple Sadowsky P5 back in 2004, I ordered an extra tort guard. Long story short, that guard has never been on the bass.
Maybe I'm an oddball, but I actually like the subtle contrast of the dark pearloid. Not as much as black/black, though.
I'm with you Ken. Other than straight black, the black MOT Roger is using works really well for me.
I ordered this after trying a fretless NYC at GC of all places. Preamp sounds great ( I only use a bit of bass or sometimes full treble with tone rolled off) with the HC pickups. I almost got it with SC pickups.
Hey there Club Sadowsky. Just thought I'd check in and see if anyone was thinking of letting go of an NYC 4 anytime soon. I've sold several of my basses lately and have 3-4 in the classifieds now. I'm wanting to get down to just one fretted bass (besides my p) and want it to be an NYC 4. If anyone has one and wants to run it buy me, please shoot me a PM.
Today, my bass arrived
courtesy of JLY. Loving it so far. It's a well loved, but well cared for Metro MS5. Plays great, sounds great. I do have one question, the stacked preamp pots are very loosy goosy turning. All the other knobs have a nice smooth action. Anything I can do to tighten things up? The knobs themselves are tight on the pot shaft, I'm just referring to the action of the stack pot itself.
That looseness is, I think, normal. All of my Sadowskys (bought new) have had a loose treble pot. Great looking bass by the way!

Rob, I remember when you got this. I was originally going to buy it but found a used NYC Will Lee and went with that. This was the first WL metro to hit the states I believe.
It's been a dream of mine , to one day own a NYC Sadowsky. I was just reading another thread in wich the posts were discussing basses by another small builder. One posted stated that the builder just made "parts basses, like Sadowsky and Lull"
Not that it matters at all to me ,but are the NYC bodies and necks made in house ?

Funny you guys are discussing pickuguards. I just bought a trans black metro with maple board a few days ago, and immediately ordered a black guard for it.
I think that I will like that look. I almost like the stock black pearl but I'm not sure all the way. The tort someone posted looks great but I have another bass on order that is white/tort and since they're going to be my pair on my main gig these days, so more contrast seemed in order.

So speaking of this Will Lee metro thats en route to me, I'm actually trying to get close to a 70s J bass sound with this axe for some Marcus like slap tones.. (I can't find much that got 70s spacing that not full sized body, which was more important to me.)
I ordered a set of the aguilar 70s wound pickups to throw in it. I haven't owned a bass with Sadowsky singles (always had hum canceling). If I'm correct, the Sadowskys are a bit more grindy in the in mids compared with a 70s pickup. Does that seem accurate? Anyone else tried the Aguilars in a Sadowsky before?
