Club Sadowsky!!!

Quick field report from the battlefield- custom ordered Sadowsky Bass objectives achieved: Impeccably playing bass (fret surfaces and relief perfect), and the Will Lee electronics do exactly what I had hoped- the proverbial "cuts through the mix" objective is more than met, and I heard all the notes on all the strings clearly. I kept the volume such that I could hear the other guys in the band while I played, yet the bass was just undeniably THERE, and I knew from the full dance floor that the bass was doing its job. I'm swooning, of course, so the next couple of weeks will or will not bear out these initial findings, but it ain't my first rodeo, nor my first Sadowsky, nor first Will Lee; Roger and Lisa Hahn have provided me with what appears to be a forever bass.

Got a pretty good deal on a new light 5-string set of Dunlop Super Bright Steels (40-60-80-100-120), and put the highest four on my MV4 to replace the dead ones that were on there. Wow, new strings transform the thing! Zingy and alive. Had to loosen the truss rod to compensate for the lighter strings (love the truss rod adjustment on the Sad), then I'll see how they settle down after a few days of playing and decide if I like steels on this bass.

So this is my 3rd Will Lee model in the past 2 months, my 5th Sadowsky since November.
Bought it brand new sight unseen from club bass of Toronto (easy decision as all sadowskys I owned played exceptionally well and none disappointed)
This one weighs in at 8.5lbs. My last one was 8.1lbs and the one before that was 8.8lbs. This is a happy medium and it sounds the fattest and fullest out of all 3. I bought new hc pickups from the NYC store because I thought the single coils were too thin sounding set flat. This bass changed that entire perception!
Well I finally found my keeper!! It's in my favorite metro finish and it's the newer version with graphite bars in the neck. I'm in love with the Will Lee model I believe it to have the most playable and fastest neck for me. I tried the uv70 and mv5 and I prefer the 1.75" nut.
Last week I put my deposit in for a custom NYC Will Lee and this bass will help me with that long 8-11 month wait!! I ordered another Will Lee 5 with chambered light ash body in candy apple orange, roasted maple neck and board. Nothing fancy but I'm so glad I went with a PJ configuration since this metro got the JJ covered!!
I'm kinda afraid dollar to dollar wise the metro will blow it out the water but I guess time will tell and I can accept the different flavor a each bass brings to the table!

Only thing I was a bit bummed out about this purchase was that the bass came with the new flimsy gigbag....I should've asked about that and see if I could have gotten the soft case instead. It's not a terrible bag but I got spoiled by my previous portabag.

Well no pics no bass right?

So I'm in the early stages of a new NYC build and I need suggestions! I put the order in last week so its not too late to make quick changes here and there.

My build: 5 string Will Lee PJ Vintage - chambered ash body painted candy orange, roasted maple neck and fretboard

Right now I have opted for the abalone dot inlays. Should I splurge and go with black pearl block inlays or abalone block inlays? If so, should I keep the hardware chrome or go black? I just don't know how itll look on a roasted neck. I'm sure whatever comes out of the store will be awesome but since I'm spoiling myself I might as well go all in.

Thanks! I hope within 8-11 months I will have a sick bass I can love for the rest of my life!

Either sounds nice. You may want to consider opening a thread asking someone to photoshop both options for you. Sometimes visually seeing what it may look like will help you make a decision.

I've been playing my new to me MV5 for almost a couple months and had a question for those of you who have compared the humcancelling pickups with the single coils... Do the single coils have more inherent midrange content than the slightly scooped humcancellings? I'm coming from a passive bass background, but I've always felt the Sadowsky pre was one of the more musical active pre's available. Just looking for a little more grind.

There have been many discussions about SC's vs HC's. Also, I believe that Roger keeps moving the HC tone towards the SC tone; and, from the little I've read, players seem favorably impressed.

If you are after the clanky funky sound of the single coil traditional Fender Jazz, then the SC's will fill the bill and then some. Probably my favorite sounding bass I have ever owned was an RV5 with the SC's. Of course, the SC's can have issues with some live lighting situations. So, I no longer have that bass. The HC's to me actually produce a thicker smoother pizz sound; which can be compelling as well. I personally don't care for the slap HC sound, because it is a little too textured and not hammer on granite enough for me. But, some folks still dig it.

Honestly, pickups aren't all that expensive. You really could get and try both and then make your own decision.
