I remember watching that second video a couple of years ago, when the bass player (can't remember his TB handle) posted that bass for sale. A few of us, me included, begged him not to sell. (As I recall, he wanted to fund a 5-er). Really like his playing. And, um, those singers. Made me want to go to Arizona (I think it was Arizona) and sit in a bar and watch this band.

He actually sends the neck to Martin Sims in the UK to get done. I got my bass almost 2 years ago and when i placed my order 3 years ago I saw another TB'er post pics of his.....not sure when Roger started to offer this optiom but it had to be more than 3 years ago.

The Will Lee has both the SCs and also a switchable mid-range boost, may be worth trying one of those.

Thanks for the feedback guys. I think I would rather foot the $200 for SC's to swap out my HC's than buy another bass. I made the mistake of buying my second hand MV5 during the holidays, so between that and gifts for the Ms' and family, I probably won't be making any big ticket purchases for a few months.

Bucephylus, that's my suspicion too. Currently playing with 3 groups of varying styles. The newest group I'm really excited about and requires I shore up my pedal board a bit more, so I'm hoping to get that squared away and then pull the trigger on the SC's in the next few months.

Before you do that, check to see what value your volume pot is. Depending on the year of the build, the earlier volume pots were 250k. The 500k pot will get the HC's closer to the SC sound. Roger suggested that swap some time ago. I did it to a MV5 that I once owned , and it did make a difference.

From a earlier thread from 9/09:
Regarding HC vs single coils-----
Before any of you switch to singles, please try replacing the volume pot with a 500K (your bass probably has a 250K volume pot). We did some extensive listening tests a few months ago and the 500K opens up the HC pickups a lot and gets them much closer to the singles. We have since made the 500K volume standard.

I'm a complete dope when it comes to bass surgery. How hard is it for a duffer like me to replace one volume pot with another?

Do you have a decent soldering iron, and do you have experience soldering? Not a completely difficult skill, but does require a certain level of experience to do it correctly.

Also, IME, the Sadowsky guts are soldered together with a high precision and high temperature soldering system and solder. I have had to run my iron a good bit hotter than usual to work inside them. And, in spite of my experience, my mod work is nowhere near as neat and tidy as the factory work; which is flawless.

It's a very easy task as long as you have some basic soldering skills. If you do not, take it to someone who can do the swap, but even more importantly, use someone that will show you how to solder properly. It will become a very valuable skill over time.

bucephylus, Jerry, thanks very much for the responses. I do have a soldering iron but agree that the work in the bass is indeed flawless. I will do nothing until I feel very comfortable with my abilities, or I will take it someone top notch (or Roger himself).

Thanks for this suggestion - I have a 2007 J5 with a Dimarzio 250k volume pot and will see how the 500k sounds.
I wouldn't swap the HC's for SC's as I like the 'B' string just as it is - but this sounds worth a go!
