Club Sadowsky!!!

Always amazes me the Sadowsky sound difference in the mix (for the ears of a simple player like myself).
Before the gig I did a quick soundcheck and the bass sounded a bit middly or hollow but the best I could find that night.
When the band started playing I heard this lovely thick, clean J-bass bottom with clear mids and top (no slappy stuff).
I remember I had an Ampeg combo that sounded brilliant at home but lost and muddy with a band.
This Sadowsky guy knows his stuff alright.

My new Metro Express arrived the day after Christmas , I have had NYC Sadowskys for years and still do . I have not been able to put this Express down , it is absolutely everything I knew it would be. A couple years ago I sold my 2000 ash maple NYC 5 string standard . I loved that bass but I don't play 5 anymore and had not for a long time , for years that 5 was my main bass. I really was missing the Ash Maple Sadowsky thing and this Ash Maple 4 string

Tobacco Metro Express is so nice , the notes so clearly just jump off this bass , its 8.6 lbs , and feels amazing , I am playing it now as a matter of fact. I still have my beloved 2009 NYC Ultra Vintage P Bass and this pair is all this guy really needs. I am so happy , Thanks Roger and Crew ! Happy new year to You All !

Just be aware that the HipShot USA tuners and the offshore tuners have different post diameters; which is actually a big deal, because the perimeter of the post is lined up with the nut slots. So, just boring out the Metro headstock doesn’t produce proper alignment.

What did you have to do to get yours Lollipops to work on your Cherry Bomb Metro?

Pat Wilkins did the work (and a fantastic job at that). He bored out the through holes. But, the misalignment that created made the slotted string retainer no longer useable. So, after conferring with Lisa, he put on the older string retainer bar. Which worked just fine. And, in truth, the only significant misalignment at that point was the G string, which still functioned just fine. So, you can get away with it; it’s just not a drop in type thing.

I would just add that the Cherry Bomb was a mighty fine bass; but, I ultimately decided that the 19mm neck taper wasn’t my thing. As I’ve explained before (and keep getting torched for), my issue with that neck is not the string spacing. No problem there. It’s just the additional 1/4” of neck width at the heel makes the bass feel NOT like a Jazz Bass.

Jimmy Coppolo is now offering the 18mm taper as an option on his basses. I ended up spec’ing an MTD with a 17.5mm taper and 1 3/4” nut. That’s a perfect taper for me, and feels way more Jazz Bass. But, Roger is pretty much fixed on the 19mm taper; which unfortunately takes a Sadowsky 5 off the table for me.

Did you use 1/2” posts or the Metro size 3/8”? I was going to just stick with the 3/8” Lollipops and was hoping for a direct replacement of the Licensed Hipshots...
