NECK DIVE,

I wish I had a dollar for every time I have had to have this conversation.

All Fender-style basses (and many others) have neck dive when seated. It does not matter if the bass weighs 7 pounds or 12 pounds.

When standing, neck dive is a function of the strap you use. If the back of your strap has a slick material (vinyl, shiny leather, etc), you will experience neck dive.

If your strap has a backing that provides more resistance (cotton, suede or anything with a rougher texture, your bass should remain in place, even if you let both hands off of the bass.

All Sadowsky straps are designed to eliminate neck dive. We offer a 2" and 3” cotton strap, a leather strap with a suede backing and our NeoStrap.

Simply; just because it doesn’t slip does not mean it doesn’t pull. It’s a thing.

I haven't seen anybody on here really complaining about neck dive, though it was mentioned. For me, the surprise was that a lighter weight caused comfort issues that I haven't experienced with heavier instruments. Given that I do believe a heavier instrument sounds better than a light weight instrument, this opened my eyes to the fact that, within reason, I don't have to worry about weight when buying an instrument, other than it being too light, which for most brands is rarely an issue. 9-10lbs is right for me.

You should look into ESO straps. They're contoured so it doesn't cut into your neck and sits more on your shoulder and outside collarbone. It's helped me immensely with the shoulder pain I used to have no matter how heavy the bass. For me I felt that straps digging in cuts off circulation and is what caused my issues.

Not sure if I ever posted my Satin Deluxe Verdine White, it's a long thread to read through. Here's the current siblings. Got the 24 Fret in Sept 2017 and the Satin in Oct 2018. Hmm, am I due for another soon? Love both of these basses, and they're both just under 7.5 pounds. Actually I have a Lakland Classic 44-60 Jazz on order with a few mods including lightweight Ash body and dual-concentric pots (passive). I'm sure it will make a nice addition to the family. Since this photo, I've gone back to the Sadowsky soapbars in the 24 Fret.

I have 10 different basses, J's and P's.
2 Sadowsky, a Sire and some I made from parts.
One J actually has a 70s Japanese plywood body (5-6 layers) and weighs a ton.
Some are 4 string, some 5.
Alder, Ash, Mahogany, Basswood, Plywood.
All these different basses, yet no neck-dive.
Oh, nearly forgot, I have a Sadowsky Neo strap.

Update: Sadowsky 5 Metro Express Gig report.

1. I installed Dunlop Straplocks and I am using a nice 2" wide padded leather strap. I did NOT experience any noticeable neck dive after a 2 Hour-long concert set. Moving on.

2. The Sadowsky ME5 Ash/Maple bass was outstanding. It is wonderful how the definition of ash/maple sits in the mix. The bass was articulate, yet carried sonic depth and weight that supportive without being boomy. Stunning bass. Superb!!!!

Yep. I predict this bass will migrate towards "first call" in your rotation as time goes on. At least IME, that's the way it's been.

My satin deluxe just got back to me from the Sadowsky shop where some shipping damage was being repaired, and I am shocked at how perfect it is. There is not a single flaw with the bass. I didn't know an instrument could be this perfect and flawless. Mind blown. Thank you to Roger, @deepestend and the @Sadowsky crew for putting up with me, and for the excellent job.!
