The 'Ultra Light' case that Sadowsky offers is fantastic. 90%+ protection of a hardcase, with nice large external and internal pockets, and even straps for carrying it on your back. That's not optimal (it feels pretty uncomforable), but for those times that you have to check a bass through on a flight, but still want the ability to strap it on your back and have the storage volume of a gig bag, it's a very good option IMO!

We have eliminated the back straps on the Ultra Light cases. I also feel our Portabag is just as protective.

I guess removing them makes sense. They were a bit handy getting from the hotel to the gig when flying, but surely not the same as a gig bag, and pretty useless for anything but that.
I agree, the Portabag would give you 'most' of the protection of the Ultra Light, so that's probably a good option for most situations. I'd still be more hesitent to check through a Porta Bag than the Ultra Light, but that's just personal 'risk assessment'

Yeah I have the Ultra Light case and use it all the time when going to small jam sessions and music lessons.
As great as it is, my band is going to be gigging pretty hard this summer as we just bought a nice van, so I was looking for something that can really take a good beating.
I may just bite the bullet and get a custom made case.

I fell the same about my mint pickguard when I got my hybrid. Wanted to get a tortoise guard. Once I started gigging it and saw it photographed on stage, I changed my mind and didnt touch it. I think it looks smokin'

If you want a REAL flight case, you're going to have to have it built. I had an amp case made by LM Engineering and they did a great job as does Calzone/Anvil. They're heavy and expensive, but if you want maximum protection, it's the only way to go. You could also check with the airline you're going to be flying with. They MIGHT let you bring it on board and stow it in one of the closets. If that's the case, a high quality gig bag or Roger's ultralite case will do nicely.

You know what would look even better? A clear pickguard or no pickguard. Then we would see more of that nice sunburst!

You know what impresses me? The strings are properly aligned on the fretboard. See how nicely they line up with the dot markers. Same on my Sadowsky. I've seen Fenders where the G string is too close to the edge.
+1 on the porta bag. It one of the best cases I have. While just short of being a hard case, it offers a great deal of protection. Its not obviously as slim as a soft case, it is still less bulky that a hard case/
