What pup/pre was used for the '51 style bass?

This is particularly interesting to me as well; because the Warwick side of building includes 18mm neck profiles, which Roger has dismissed.

When I last snooped around, I was unable to find any communication linkage to evaluate that kind of interaction. So, wait and see for me. GL

Exactly why I was wanting to go this route - I love the form factor of my MJ5 and it's 18mm spacing and neck dimensions.

I actually received my quote back this afternoon after reaching out this morning for an update. I was told there were some updates going on resulting in errors that held up the process. Fair enough, no big deal. Price-wise, it's what I expected and I was excited about moving forward. That is, until I continued reading the email and found the absolute do not pass go, do not collect $200 part - May 2025 delivery date. Nope. Full stop. Not doing that. FWIW, it's also a 50% deposit for the German Custom Shop.

As much as I like my MJ5 and would love to have a fancy, built-for-me version, I'll just stick with what I got.

Eh, it was worth a shot. Ya never know unless you ask.

Does the Will Lee preamp not have various pot adjustments on the backplate, including output level?

As Roger posted above, the pot adjustments have no effect when the mid boost is turned off. You can set it for an increase in volume when the mid boost is activated, but not for the regular output of the bass.

I mean no offense in asking this question : I see your here in the states , why wouldn't you just have the bass built at the NYC shop and work directly with Roger ?

No offense taken, but I answered that question in my first post about this process: the NYC shop doesn’t build the MJ basses nor anything like them that’s built around the platform of 18mm spacing at the bridge for a 5-string. So, given it’s a German-only offering, you have to go German Custom Shop if you want to have one built with your choice of materials.

No offense taken, but I answered that question in my first post about this process: the NYC shop doesn’t build the MJ basses nor anything like them that’s built around the platform of 18mm spacing at the bridge for a 5-string. So, given it’s a German-only offering, you have to go German Custom Shop if you want to have one built with your choice of materials.

All good, I wish the NYC shop did make this particular bass; I'd go that route in a heartbeat.

During the last weekend I was testing the new Hartke LX5500, so I recorded this track using the onboard preamp off on my Sad and using the DI postEQ on the head, this was the result:

It was another confirmation that Sadowsky basses couldn't be related only to their preamp as some people think, the supreme woods quality and the construction makes this basses sounds like we learned to love.

I've owned a ton too and I've had a difficult time getting used to my SC custom build. Aesthetically I'm very happy with it, it's just super cool. However, I do not like the J Super J combo or the Will Lee circuit, seems to have a much lower output than any of my current Sadowsky NYC's (5) and the tone is just odd. That said, I haven't played another Sad with the WL so it may be just the Super J pup. It also hangs differently, not bad just different. Someday I'll replace/modify the bridge pup and maybe pull the WL circuit. As always YMMV.

FWIW, I've most typically seen the 18mm request for 5'ers.

Have you ever added another battery to a Sadowsky preamp? I have done it 4 times and there is definitely more output/volume/headroom, I know it from experience. I currently own 3 Sadowsky basses (had 5 at one point) and they all have different output

Yea I have. And I couldn’t tell any discernible difference.
There should be additional headroom, but that’s about it.
And as the guy who literally started this club like, a decade ago, and who has owned and gigged probably 20 different Sadowskys of pretty much every variation (the latest being a single cut JJ that just came today ironically), I can say, with a pretty good amount of experience that there is no perceivable difference.

Hi Roger! Just on the 5 string. I have one of your marvelous NYC 4 string basses. It is great. But, I vastly prefer the 18mm neck taper that Fender uses, in contrast to the wider neck that is required for the 19mm bridge on the 5. I know the German shop has some models now using the 18mm neck taper. I’d be very interested in a Sadowsky JJ5 with the 18mm neck on it. Hope that makes sense.

I think that's true of the bart preamps, which can run 9v or 18v (hence the 918 in the name), but as Roger says, his preamps are a very different design. While I can't challenge your experiences, as I've never tried it, FWIW, I would actually expect some kind of difference in the case of Roger's preamps.

That said, it's not the way Roger's preamp was designed to run, so I'm not messing with it... especially since I have absolutely zero issues with it the way it is.

I agree with this. If a pre was designed to run 18v then that’s what it is. If it’s designed to run 9v same thing.
I’ve never had the desire to modify my Sadowsky’s to run 18v.
