My new VJ5 is almost ready! I just got these pics from Kevin. I had spec'd a parchment guard, but after seeing these pics, I decided to go with the tort (and get the parchment as a spare). What are your thoughts? Well, everyone except Ken Jung, cause, well you know... he just doesn't dig the fancy top/pickguard thing.

I agree. Sometime the "busier" look of tort can pull away from the top.

I don't dislike tort with other exotic tops, but on this bass I like the parchment better.

When I first saw the photos side-by-side, the parchment appears "louder" and the tort appears more subdued. I get the tort being busy/fighting the quilt thing. Hmmmm.

Maybe back to my original (parchment) spec and have the tort cut as a spare. No biggie to change it out anytime.

I'm on the tort side of the fence. The parchment is too plain looking for such a gorgeous top, IMO. Doesn't fit the theme. It's kinda like wearing jeans to a black and white party.

I also dig the parchment most on that. I think the fact that it's such a bright burst, it works well. I REALLY like tort on the '59 burst (obviously), but on that burst, the parchment would be my personal choice.

But I feel kind of bad, when I read so many people raving about quilts, spalts, .....

My vote is the parchment guard. I agree that the tort is too busy.

But if you get the tort guard too then you can swap out to your hearts content.

don't feel bad. I also like plain ash/alder or solid colors.

Exotic tops is something I like to look at, but they are not "me". I'd probably feel unconfortable playing them live, like wearing an outfit that puts too much attention on you.

I don't know why you should or would. I ALSO like the look of the non-topped basses... especially with the P or J style theme. In fact, 2/3 of my Sadowsky basses and the vast majority of the other (many) J style basses I've had (and still have) don't have tops, and that has NO ill effect on my appreciation for those axes.
