Club Sadowsky!!!

I love my new to me sadowsky, but I am going to compare it with Vic's SC loaded one to see if it makes sense to put some SCs in it. It has some grind, but it leans more towards the polite side with the the HCs and morado board. I also need a portabag. I love those gigbags.

That is one fine looking instrument! Is the body ash or alder? I'm assuming that it's ash.

I am looking forward to the outcome of the HC/SC pickup experiment. It may be interesting to install the 500k pot first to see what that does.;)

What's all this chatter over at the Sadowsky forums about blocks (and binding?) as an option for NYC basses? Getting ready to order my first Sadowsky around August and pearl blocks with white binding is just going to make it so much sweeter.

I ordered Ebony Blocks on mine. Binding is not an option. I think I am correct in saying it is Blocks only. Cant Wait to get it.

Yeah, we can do that, but keep in mind, all my Sadowskys are maple boarded, so that's also gonna' change things. Depends on what you're looking for with the diffs. Some of the pickup diffs will be affected by the morado, some will not.

A few months ago, I ventured into the Sadowsky compound to compare a few basses they had in stock to determine what I wanted on my "ordered" Sadowsky.

One of the comparisons was SC vs. HC. Granted, this was all within the confines of their showroom. It wasn't on a gig or recorded.

While I did hear a difference between the two, it was very slight compared to the hum the SC's had (that the HC's didn't).

While I might notice the tonal difference while playing, I doubt my bandmates or anybody listening would.

On the other hand, everybody listening will hear the hum of the SC's.

Now I'm sure it'll be a lot less noticeable in the context of a song with everybody playing but I've got to start somewhere. And for me, the lack of hum will have (at least initially) more of a positive impact on my playing than any tonal difference the SC's might have.

As an aside, I went in mainly with the intent of comparing JJ vs. PJ pickups on a 24 fret bass. I ended up leaving ordering a Will Lee. For my money (literally), the Will Lee rocks.

Hmmmm; I don't find the diff b/t the SC's and HC's to be subtle at all.
HC's: big, wide hifi J tone. deep lows, sparkly highs, a little soft in the mids
SC's: more mid focused, more raw, more grind

Ok, I'm a bit confused. First, a Will Lee has SC pickups in it (or did you change your order?), also, when you compared SC to HC was that both on JJ vs JJ, or did you mix models with PJ? Exactly what did you compare to what, is my main question.

Nobody has less tolerance for hum than I do, and while I'll give you I rarely solo a pickup (I play mostly blended, but then favoring one or the other... but not to a large extent), when fully blended, the SC's are dead silent for me.

So, when soloing, or significantly favoring one pickup or the other with SC's, yeah, you get hum, but it depends on the venue how bad it is. I also disagree with your comment; "On the other hand, everybody listening will hear the hum of the SC's." I've played a LOT of gigs where I'm getting hum (and it doesn't always mean SC pickups!), and the hum is ALWAYS buried in the mix easily. Just talk to any strat player. A little volume control between tunes, and you're good to go.

I also definitely disagree with your opinion on the significance of the differences, but that could possibly be explained by playing style and tonal preferences (bass/amp eq settings, amp/cab types, etc).

To play my own devil's advocate, and also to avoid being accused of being an SC pusher again :D I definitely do get your point about hum, though. I have both SC and HC equipped Sadowsky basses, and it is very nice to just not have to think about whether you'll get hum or not in a venue, and know you have the full freedom of blending and favoring/soloing without considering noise.

FWIW anyway.

I did change my WL to HC. And it was JJ vs. JJ on the SC to HC comparison.

The basses I tried had no hum when the balance was equal. But as soon as I turned it on way or another, even just a little bit, hum city.

This goes to my comment about trying the basses in their showroom and not on a gig. I definitely agree that in the middle of a song, the hum is much less noticeable if at all.

And I think you and Chef are in the same boat here.

It's not that I don't hear a difference, but for me, the difference is minimal. I don't think I could tell the difference in a blind listening test. And for me, the difference isn't so great that I couldn't use either pickup on any type of gig.

True confession time, the best sounding J bass I've had was a Lull with SC pickups. I don't know if it was the pickups or something else about the bass but it had tone. And the hum. :ninja:

I can see somewhere down the road putting in a pair of SC and comparing the two but for me, it'll be HC's to start. I just wanted to post my opinion because it seemed like the SC's were getting all the love around here lately.

The difference is much more pronounced with the 5 string versions IMO. Swapping HCs for Antiquity IIs in my MS4 (I ended up swapping back) was a much more subtle change than going from HCs to Nordstrand Js in my RS5. Not sure why ...

+1, though the only side-by-side comparison I've done was fivers.

BTW, we finally had some half-decent (i.e. not raining) weather around here, so I hauled my QSC HPR122i speakers out into the back yard and plugged in my mixer, ipod, and Sadowsky, and gave the backyard (and neighborhood) some tunes for the Fourth:

Grooving on a Sadowsky in the backyard along with favorite tunes through great speakers = major WIN. :hyper:
