I am somewhat confused here.
I thought my bass (UV-70 5 metro) came with single coils, but after checking and doing some small research i found that it has Single coils Humcancelling.
I even saw that most NYC models came with SC HC, and only a couple had SC.
What is the difference between the 2 besides the price?
is the SC better?
On a side note my sadowsky is extremly quiet and get pretty much no hum or buzz whatsoever when connected direct to the PA.
When i connect my fender the hum is very noticable.

That's very personal: what do *you* prefer?
The Humcancelling (HC), to me, sound mid scooped, and sorta "smooth-jazz-ish," and that's not my thing.
The true single coil (SC) sound more raw, more grindy, and much more mid present to me; and that's what I personally prefer.
Both good, but, pretty different, to my ear.

+1 To Chef's comment above... that pretty much sums it up.
HC's are standard on all Metro J models except the Will Lee, and if you don't specifically ask for singles, you will also get HC's on every NYC J model except the Will Lee.
I prefer the singles also, especially on the ash/maple basses, but the HC's obviously sound good also, per Chef's description.
If I was playing a UV70, I'd have singles in there... period. IMO of course.

About 2 weeks ago i was my playing my sadow going direct and had an Avalon system for monitor with dual frequency headphones to hear the bass. (this is how i ussualy setup every sunday, just bass direct and headphones)
As i was playing i noticed that the bass was cutting through the mix like never before, it sometimes gets lost in the mix and i can tell instantly. but this time it was such a clear and noticable tone. I then saw that the trebel knob was turned higher than i normally have it, which made me realize the importance of it.
I think i remember Vic going from HC to SC on one of his sadows, if you are here Vic what were your first and most noticable impressions on the change.

I...well, actually Vic did the work...just went from HC to SC on my RV5 Metro, and the results were as I detailed above.
The HC's are great for some things: smooth jazz, gospel, praise, modern R&B...where-ever that smoother, purer sound would suit you.
That's not where I am though, thus, the swap for me.

Exactly what i was thinking Kjung! ash/maple is gives me that crisp clear tone and i thought that SC would complement that combo very well.
ahh ok, it was you chef. man my memory needs a tune up.
but ill really think about and let you know what i decide on, i am in no way unsatisfied with my current sound i am actually very pleased with it. What i mainly play is Gospel, praise, shout and jazz, which are suit the HC as you say. I think i only want the SC but i dont really need them.
I guess this is an excuse for another bass with SC!

Interestingly, the SC's kind of move the wide, pure, upper treble extended tone of the HC's (which most would call 'crips and clear') to a tighter low end, a more aggressive upper mid/lower treble grind, and a reduction in upper treble sheen. All those things result in, IMO and IME, a bass sitting better in the mix, and actually sounding 'brighter and crisper' in the mix, since the slightly more compressed and bright and grindy tone 'sits better' in a mix than the deep, pure, sizzly inherent voicing of the HC's for most. For me, they also remove a bit of that 'clank and gank' from the ash/maple spec that I hear (at least with my technique, strings, and ampification).
Of course, depends what you are going for, and also depends on your chops and technique. My buddy Joeykun's Sadowsky bass kill for his tone goal and technique with the HC's... so no 'wrong or right', better or worse answer here.
I think Chef pretty much answered this already, but yeah, I swapped the pickups and pot on his RV5. I simply own both SC and HC equipped J5's, as a PJ5, which of course is all HC, so for me to compare, I just pick up a different bass.
But in short, Ken, Chef, and myself are all in agreement with how we characterize the diffs between HC and SC, and it's up to each player to decide what they want.
I also want to make sure we're on the same page regarding the whole SC vs HC thing. I do feel the SC's cut a mix better, but I DO NOT want to imply the HC's don't cut well, and I certainly don't want to imply the SC's generally sound better for everyone. Neither are true. Besides, a lot of that also depends on personal playing style and prefs, type of rig, venue, etc, etc, etc, etc, etc.

Thanks, Ken! Yeah, I really like the HC pups in my Standard 4's. You describe them perfectly. I like that upper sheen that the HC have and found the Singles to be a little polite in the highs for my tone goals.
Here is my latest weapon that just arrived an hour ago! This was made by Alex and it really is stunning and plays like a charm right out of the box. Robert (dragonbass) added a D-Tuner for me as well.

All comments about sound differences aside.....the biggest difference is that the HC pickups are really, really QUIET!!!!! If you mostly play with both pickups up full, I thnk the single coils are a great choice. But if you like to back one pickup off, I highly recommend the HC pickups.
