If it's delivered at all. I only TOLD him they were on the way. The bass was definitely kickin' more with the SC's in it. You'd be amazed how much about 9 pounds of old newspapers feels like a bass in the case... just sayin'... ;)

Ooops, did I just say that out loud? Uh oh...

That sounds like what I expect to happen, and
it sounds very accurate to what's happening in my "exactly same spec'd Valenti,"
which I like a lot.
The HC's in the RV5 were too scooped, for me and my personal tastes.

I would like to try your Sadowsky one day. This does not support my experiences at all with the one that I had.

No. It had the SCs when I got it. I was more compelled by your comments of:

I really liked the bass for the most part, but descriptors like "punch" or "focus" would in no way come to mind. That's my ears any way. I would say the PJ-R had those attributes in FAR greater amounts even though it has the series P and the SC bridge PU. In fact, the absence of those things was exactly why I chose to part with the JJ.

The HC's will sound a little bit more modern... a slightly "sweeter" slap tone, but the SC's will always cut a mix better, preserve more edge, and sound a bit more open/flat as opposed to the slight scoop of the HC's. As Roger has said, moving from the 250K to the 500K pot in older basses that don't yet have this done helps a little in this area, but changing the pickups does a whole lot more.

This is NOT to be hard on HC's, they sound great, and lots of folks prefer them. I like them a lot, and I'll always have at least one of my Sadowsky basses with HC's in it, but I do generally like SC's better.

Given my love for the SC's in my ash/maple, I ended up swapping out the HC's for SC's in my very lightweight alder/RW NYC. I didn't dig that at all. While the singles tamed a bit of the aggressive sizzle in the ash/maple and tightened up the low end nicely (MUCH better than the scooped, sizzly HC's for my taste in that spec), it was 'too much of a good thing'.

Where the singles tightened to big low end and made the bright sound ash/maple spec more grindy and warm than clicky, the singles in the ash/maple moved that spec in the wrong direction... softened the already smooth top end too miuch, and tightened the low end that was already 'alder tight' and low mid present to begin with.

Now, this could have just been my particular bass (I'm talking based on a sample of only one, which I try not to do, since every bass is so different), but IMO and IME, the singles sucked the magic out of my alder/RW Sadowsky.... making it sound a bit dull and compressed.

That was the bass I am talking about. It was an NYC SC JJ. I've only owned two Sadowskys. That one and the PJ-R that Rodney snagged a couple of weeks ago. The JJ had the "magic" formula, Ash/maple, but my ears didn't hear what the TB brethren describe. I said I would like to try another to see if it was the bass or the ears.

home for lunch, RV5JJ w/sc's unpacked, and:
much as I thought.
mid-scoop gone, and she's a raging, grindy bad mo-fo...
probably a little more so than the alder/morado/sc/sad preamp valenti, but,
that bass has broke in da XL170 nickels, and the rv is sporting fresh sadowsky black stainless...

not quite as mean as the ash/maple/sc's MV5, but, what is, really....

Interested in if that holds up on a gig. I dug it solo at home also (very mid punchy and grindy) when I did the swap, but all the bass and treble disappeared for me on the gig when I dug in and was in a mix with my particular ash/RW. However, the very lightweight NYC alder basses with true RW boards are a bit different than the Metro's, with the heavier, non routed alder and Morado boards, which moves them closer to the ash/maple tone. So, that might just be killer. Never heard a Metro RV with singles.

This bad boy has a new home!!! I prefer Standards over vintage models and I always get nervous when those Stock Update emails go out.
Sure enough, one of my favorite color/wood combos comes up on the site and I just had to have this one. Beautiful top, Ash/Maple, 7.35 lbs.
And, the HC pups that work so well with the 4 bangers. I am also having them add the Hipshot D-Tuner as well! This will be a great companion
with my Red Standard 4. Family photos to follow once recieved!!!

Yes, although I loved many things about the Will Lee I just couldn't get use to the Vintage style.
I took the pick guard off to help but then the holes were bothering me. Call me crazy. But, it all
came down to comfort. For my playing style the Standards are the way for me.

The WL is a great bass and the necks are awesome. I will miss that the most.
