To my understanding.. You have to pay for the extra pickguard no matter how you don't want the original one.

If somebody cared that much about weight, that they would buy a bass with a hole in it, i dont think they would want a metal pickup cover.. its a bit contradictory.

Just to get away from the hole....
My RV5 came with HC's in it...which I just didn't dig.
So, I ordered up some SC's.
My BGM bro Vic wanted to directly compare the before and after in the alder/morado spec RV5, so, I sent him the unmodified bass and pickups. He did the install, along with the 500kohm pot, kept it for q few weeks, and:
she's due back today...nice!

What's your take on the SC vs HC on alder basses?
For me it is definitely a winner on my ash/maple MV5 and the ash/morado UV5

Moving to SC's does the same general thing on any wood spec. It'll add growl, punch, and focus. There'll be a bit more going on in the mids and also in the "low treble" region (2-3K). This makes for a more aggressive tone overall. The HC's will sound a little bit more modern... a slightly "sweeter" slap tone, but the SC's will always cut a mix better, preserve more edge, and sound a bit more open/flat as opposed to the slight scoop of the HC's. As Roger has said, moving from the 250K to the 500K pot in older basses that don't yet have this done helps a little in this area, but changing the pickups does a whole lot more.
This is NOT to be hard on HC's, they sound great, and lots of folks prefer them. I like them a lot, and I'll always have at least one of my Sadowsky basses with HC's in it, but I do generally like SC's better.
