For you guys who have ordered custom basses from sandberg - did you hear anything while waiting for it to come, or did you just get a notification when it arrives at the dealer?

I heard nothing from them, that was prior to the pandemic. Took a while, too, until I got the bass. I ordered in mid October 2019 and received it early March 2020, something like one week before Switzerland got its shutdown. i.e. it took close to 5 months. That was about a month earlier than projected when I ordered; back then, Sandberg said it would take until April or Mai. 5-7 months seems to be the usual time frame.

I've ordered 3 Sandbergs over 5 years. Sandberg did not send routine progress updates but they were always responsive whenever I asked about progress (with communications via the dealer). I guess they are a semi-custom builder with sufficiently high manufacturing volumes that means it is a prohibitive overhead to send routine updates to every customer.

Nothing.

I ordered it in May and I was told I'd get it in September, so I waited. Early in August I got an update from the dealer, saying Sandberg contacted them and that my bass was nearly done. A week later I got confirmation that it was on its way and I finally had it in my hands first weekend of September or last one in August, I forget.

I tested some Sandbergs in my local music store today, and was really impressed. My only gripe is that the necks are a tad too wide for my liking. I know the Electra series have a slimmer neck (37 mm @ nut), so I was wondering if it is possible to get a California with the slimmer neck? Anyone knows? They had no Electra in the stor, but are they as light as the California basses?

I'm pretty sure that the Marlowe DK signature basses have a slimmer neck - 38 mm vs 39.5 mm. They'd probably be able to put that neck on a custom bass for you - not sure how much more it would cost

Edit: the marlowe DK is basically a jazz bass thickness, where the standard width is in between a jazz bass and p bass

If you're willing to go custom, it would be worth messaging your dealer and asking them if they'd be able to put that neck profile on a custom non-reliced bass. I'm guessing it might involve some sort of price increase, but who knows!

Where’s a good place for a guy in Canada to get a Sandberg from? I see VSN is a Canadian dealer but they don’t have anything in stock that I’m interested in. I’m looking for sources that ship to Canada that are reliable and reasonable when it comes to shipping. Thank you.

Newer than when?

AFAIK Sandberg basses are not chambered. The Custom Thinline is chambered/hollowbody. Otherwise, weight is down to wood selection.

Hey All - Marc here (from Sandberg).

Great question! We typically update the dealer once the bass is complete and being prepped for shipping. For updates along the way, we do our best to respond to inquiries as they come in, though it's important to note that we are a relatively small builder. We do strive to keep our production lead times low on special orders, and always prioritize these orders to meet the constantly growing demand. While we are not able to stop production to give status updates on every bass with every inquiry, we will certainly alert the dealer if any disruptions occur in the process the best we can.

Additionally, we give an estimate to the dealers as to when the instruments will be completed once they place the order, and work diligently to ensure these lead times are met as early as possible. After NAMM, we saw a huge surge in orders. Then the pandemic happened.

All of this said, NEVER hesitate to reach out directly with questions/concerns! You are welcome to DM me here with any issues!

Thanks for that info Marc (@MN - Bass Dad). I placed a custom order for a Lionel, just last week. Was told 6 months (ordered through SoundPure in NC, USA), but sure hope it's quicker!
