Could someone with a California Central strung with nickel-plated rounds please tell me if is it possible to get a plump, rounded tone from the bass?
The few demos on YouTube seem uninterested in that kind of sound ... but surely a 3-band EQ and a humbucker wired in series allow the mids to be brought forward and the extremities gently curved away? Or is the less warm tone I hear in the demos solidly baked into the preamp and pickup?

So I've struggled a bit with the tone of my Sandberg California P bass (active/passive). It's the finest feeling and best playing bass I've ever owned but it's been just a bit too brittle and grindy sounding to fit in with a lot of the music I've been playing. Not wanting to mess around with the electronics, I decided to swap my DR Sunbeams for D'addario Nylon Tapewounds. What a difference! No need for a set up and they sound really good. The tapes are still plenty bright and articulate but provide a more vintage tone that I was missing. Looks like I'll be holding onto this bass and taking it to my next gig.
Question about the blend knob on an active Sandberg TT (or any of their other two pickup configs). If you set the blend midway between the neck pickup and the midpoint of the knob, is it neck+bridge pickups both on but leaning more towards the neck? Vice versa if you set the blend midway between the bridge pickup and the midpoint of the knob, is it neck+bridge both on but leaning more towards the bridge? Whereas setting the blend to its center point would mean neck and bridge both maxed?

Yes, but they are not linear. A lot of change happens in the first 20% in either direction, similar to a tone control where a lot of change is in the last 20% of rotation.

The thermal process used on masterpieces is different from the roasting process used on necks, right? And masterpieces by default go through the thermal process but not the roasting process (of the neck) unless specified?
What sort of aging details are in a soft aged Sandberg? The ones I’ve seen look (basically) new in pics.

After much time posting and responding on this thread, I’m sorry to say that I’ve broken rank and gone fender. I’m going to be selling my TM4 on the ‘verb and with heavy heart will be leaving you all 
I had the same experience with my TM4, I tried out Gibson flatwounds and I also got an awesome improvement. Glad you found something that worked.
I think they’re really interesting, and wouldn’t be for all basses. I say tension is in between Labella low tension, and T.I. jazz, and the texture is in between polished flat wound and cobalt flats… Just different, but great.

Sounds good!! Did you have to do large setup changes when you put these strings on? I’ve also experienced a lot of brittleness when I turn up the treble knob, so I’m starting to think that I have to try out some other strings. I have a VM4.
