Club Sandberg (part 2)

I like the supremes a lot. With the addition of the mid control with 3 selectable frequencies and the coil select that switches between P/J and dual humbucker configurations, they are far more flexible than my VMs. To my ears the supremes can also provide a little more bottom end than the VMs. The 4 string is amazingly light (a little over 7 pounds) but has no neck dive. Interestingly, the 5er, while not heavy, is not nearly as light. I still like and use my VMs quite a bit also however. My favorite of the group as far as playability is the sunburst VM4, but the supreme 4 is a close second. The black VM4 plays great as well, but the neck has a gloss finish rather than the satin finish on all the others (I guess becasue its reliced?) which makes it a little less smooth to play. The black one is a bit older than the rest of them so I don't know if the gloss finish is still a thing. Can others who have reliced Sandbergs advise whether your neck is satin or gloss?

I have 4 masterpieces and all of them have the sanded/relic/satin feel on the necks.

They will accommodate special requests. On one of the builds I asked they do the normal masterpiece relic treatment on the neck and fingerboard, but leave the body clean.
Body woods still went through Thermo/vibration treatments. Just no relic on the body.

To those of you with a VM, how do you get along with the MM pickup and have you found it useful solo'd?

I just picked up a VM4 w/ Sandberg black label pickups and I'm having a hard time with the sound of the MM solo'd. Pretty harsh to my ears. The pickups combined work well and the neck pickup alone does, too.

Is the MM pickup wired parallel?

If you've tried replacing the MM pickup, what did you get instead and how were the results?

Now I’m wondering if there’s a circuit issue cause my treble knob in passive mode (the passive tone control) doesn’t make any treble cut. I don’t see a capacitor in the circuit.

Not sure if this is the correct wiring diagram. My circuit doesn’t have the blend pot connected to a PCB like this diagram shows and the nodes in the PCB board (that the treble pot is connected to) look different in my bass vs the diagram.

Any ideas?

Hi, the black cylindrical shaped thing reads 100 micro Farad and seems to be your capacitor.
The passive tone control only works half of the travel of the knob, CCW from the center detent (when I remember correctly).

Have you already played your (presumably) beautiful Sandberg in a band rehearsal?

You sure that's the cap? I thought so initially but it says 100 uf. That's not a cap range for a tone control. I would expect 0.047 or 0.022 in a Sandberg. The max you generally see is 0.100 for a very dark vintage vibe on early Fenders.

Even if it's from center, it's making no difference. I've listened to demos of VM4s online and the tone control did much more and my old TT4 had a noticeable treble cut also.

I haven't played it in a band setting yet. Definitely want to do that to better evaluate that MM pickup. When I got my TT4 it took about a month before my ears adjusted to the tones. I mainly play Fenders and Squiers so the brightness of Sandbergs is a major shift for me.

No, I don’t use it solo, doesn’t sound that great to me. Also, I rarely use the P pickup by itself. The best sound is with the blend control centered, I run all my basses like that.

Is your circuit like mine? I posted it a few posts above. Does your passive tone control take off a noticeable amount of highs?

Hello fellow Sandberg lovers!! I recently scored a 2006 Basic with the one MM style pickup. I think the preamp is bad. With the volume pulled to passive everything is wonderful. Once back to active it starts crackling and then I get strange oscillating sounds which disappears when switched to passive.
Being 20 years old I was thinking of changing it out to a Trickfish IPA preamp. Thoughts/suggestions? Meanwhile a photo of the guts.

Trickfish Onboard Preamps are very nice.

You might also look at a John East Uni Pre.
