i am a huge fan! since '93. dan maines is one of my biggest influences. the s/t album from 95 is the first record i learned to play in its entirety. the bakerton group is really good as well!
Oh yes! A Dan Maines appreciation thread! I'm all about it. I've been a fan since about '93 as well, I saw them on the Trasitional Speedway League Tour. They've gone through such a transformation over the years, from DC hardcore to bluesy rock/jam stuff. I've got S/T on vinyl, I'll cry when it wears out.
I haven't been a fan for that long, I only found them about a year ago when I bought Blast Tyrant and fell in love with The Mob Goes Wild, Cypress Grove and Regulator (still some of my favourite songs to date) and decided to by as much of their back catalog as possible. Great band, love their new album too... kinda reminds me of a hard rock Johnny Cash. Don't know why!
I've been digging Clutch since Passive Restraints...way, way back.
I'm stoked to say that I'm finally going to get to see them live on new years eve in Baltimore. IN all these years, I've never seen them. But I just got two tickets in today and on new years, my girl and I will be checking them out live...I'm stoked!

Dan is a great pocket player, and Clutch was at their best when they were a 4 piece. I've seen them live at least 13 times and I have to say the last show I attended SUCKED.
Way too much of a jam band now, I counted 7 people on stage when they opened for Coheed & Cambria. They need to trim the fat and get back to the basics!

I'm a newcomer to clutch - I too saw them open for Coheed and loved em, even though I was distracted at the time...
I've checked em out on youtube but haven't gotten a cd yet - which would you aficionados say is the best for a newb to get?

pick up the self titled album (has the surface of the moon on the cover) it's pretty grooving and simple. elephant riders is also a good one to start with. those two albums are after the transition from a hardcore-type band to a jammier outfit. if you dig those, move right on down the line. jam room, pure rock fury, blast tyrant, robot hive/exodus, then from beale st. to oblivion... i am not too pumped on the last one, though. there are a few live ones in there, too.
clutch is a great band, and they're real easy to get in to. everyone i know likes clutch after i have played it for them or taken them to a show. even your girlfriend will dig clutch! all of mine have, anyway.
the earlier stuff is good, too. pretty powerful. some of the tracks on transnational speedway league still give me goosebumps all these many years later. it's just way different stuff than they've played and have been playing since 1995. i remember seeing them jam stuff out at shows in 95 or so and they weren't very good at it. they've come a long way!

aye there one hell of a live band to just the production makes it harder for me to listen to the earlier stuff
They used to throw parties on the Potomac River near here and buy buckets of chicken from KFC and had huge parties back in the day.

I'm going to recommend as a beginner, you avoid the earlier stuff, unless you like harder styled vocals. A lot of people I know love Clutch, but not the early stuff, due to the screamy type vocals. I think "Elephant Riders" is a perfect midway point. They still had the heavy grooves, but Neal's vocals were more on the singing side of things.
If you don't mind some yelling, the self titled is amazing.
Big fan. I like the first four or so albums the best, but their all good. They have all the elements of a great rock band- driving riffs, great guitar, great vocals, and a superb sense of humor. Dan Maines has some of the best bass lines in rock, period.

I'll play devil's advocate and say that Robot Hive/Exodus is my favorite. I love the new blues-drenched soul music thing. you can never go wrong with a harmonica and organ solo.
