Coheed and Cambria Bass Sound

would any body be able to help me find a sound close to or somewhat similiar to the suffering from coheed and cambria.

I am using:
1978 american p-bass with quarter pounders a leo quan bridge and brass nut (even though the p-bass is not quite as versitile as the specter Q4)
Peavey mark 6 bass head with a peavey 2x10 and 1x15 bass cab
and an MXR Bass D.I. M-80

You and me both man. Mic Todd's got incredible tone. However, I have no insights....

All you need is a good Spector and a clean signal path with a nice, transparent amplifier. That Spector tone is unmistakable and definately isn't rocket sciene to pick out of the Coheed and Camria mix. It's nice to hear such a clear bass mix on a progressive rock band's discs. I'd go so far as to call it refreshing in a genre where they usually mix the bass far below everything else volume wise.

do you know of an ways to mimic a spector tone without spending the spector cash, i am more then willing to do some mods if i can get half decent results.

Sorry but I think that your cause is lost, a P-bass will always sound like a P no matter what you do to it, and since you have a nice old one, I wouldn't butcher it to add a bridge pickup.

Think about it though, if the bass player from coheed and cambria starts using a p-bass on the next album, will you suddenly start to like the tone you already have?

bottom line : unless you buy another bass, I don't think you'll have that tone.

+1. You really need a nice and punchy bridge pickup, with some clean bottom end. A spector sounds like a spector. Although he used a Jazz live the last time I saw them on tour, he was kind of buried in the mix (more factors than just his bass) but his recorded sound is awesome.

In regards to your current gear, I'd try messing with the DI (more contour, a little maybe) and be sure to play fingerstyle closer to the bridge.

as far as what I've been told....on his last tour , Mic was using the Fender Geddy Lee signature....you can see he was using it on some youtube stuff.....Mic is a very nice guy as well...peace

thanks for all the feedback, i think i am going to buy a cheap bass with a p/j setup and just hot rod it just because i want a more versatile bass and something that i wont mind throwing around on stage.

I don't think a large portion of Mic's tone comes from the bass. Throughout the years he has used Rebop Spectors (two EMG humbuckers), Spector Euro LX's (EMG P/J), Fender Jazz basses, and Fender precisions. Yet his tone is still generally the same no matter what bass he is using.

I think the most important thing is to get a good tube bass head (Mic uses Ampeg)

With a P/J, you should be able to get the sound pretty easily using roundwound stainless strings an d scooping the mids on your amp. I'd back off the bridge PUP a bit if you're able.

A bridge pickup is going to get you halfway there, but I'd buy an SX and mod that before I'd touch a 70's P-bass.

Mic is using Fender American Vintage series basses these days and Fender Pro amplification.

Scooped mids and roundwounds. A two-pickup bass will help. Roll back the volume on the bridge pickup about 1/4 turn, maybe back off the treble on your bass. Yes, he is using a Jazz now.

i can never hear him all that well.. maybe if he scooped less. but what i can hear.. its always badass.

glad hes off the coke and back in the band. neverender was incredible
