Double Bass colburn audition

Does anyone know who's going to be teaching at colburn next year? I know that david moore and paul ellison left and that leigh mesh came in for a trial year this year. But someone told me that they didn't think that leigh mesh was going to teach next year. Who else could they get in LA? Does anybody know who's teaching there next year?

I'd like to know this info as well before I book a flight to L.A... I've heard they've invited a few people to do masterclasses/lessons before making a decision. Some of the names being thrown around kind of surprised me, i.e., Gary Karr, Francois Rabbath, Bozo Paradzik?? Anyone at Colburn right now able to confirm/deny?

Gary Karr! That would be unfortunate. It would be cool if Rabbath did masterclasses every one in a while. They'll probably get someone like Dennis Trembly or Chris Hanulik. Why couldn't David Moore have just stayed there! Has it even been confirmed yet that Leigh Mesh is leaving?

in the latest Bass World there is a colburn ad with leigh mesh as the listed professor
Colburn is such a great school im sure whoever they pick will be fantastic
my guess is an audition there could only benefit you as a player
i know i am going to LA to audition next year if i make it past the pre-screening

Benharrisfan,
Excalibur is right. It's very easy for trolls to utilize these hot topics as means to create a false thread, thus misleading the general bass community populous.
I happen to be a rather close friend of several members of the administration at the Colburn Conservatory, such as the dean and the chair of the academic committee and the search is still ongoing. I do not mean to refute what my colleague Masterbass has contributed. Robert Caplin is a fine player and is definitely at the top of a very short list of finalists for the position. A key point to remember for any process such as this is that one cannot simply nominate a professor and expect them to show up within days. A potential professor for this type of situation is expected to contribute the vast majority of their time to this position. This entails uprooting their lives. One might have to move a family across the country, sever ties with a professional ensemble, as well as another educational institution. Please understand, from these candidate's points of views, how painstakingly thorough this process must be in order for a suitable result to occur. This being said, several members on the search committee have expressed interest in a long-term investment in terms of the next double bass professor. They are looking at a fairly young, yet experienced player to take over pedagogical duties at the Conservatory. Unfortunately, the only name I can remember off the top of my head besides Mr. Caplin is Edward Merritt, principal double bass of the Grand Rapids Symphony. He has established himself at a young age as a virtuoso in both a soloistic sense as well as an orchestral sense. Because Colburn is looking to "cultivate a more solo-oriented" studio, he is a logical fit due to the well-rounded nature of his education. Once any of the candidates are named to the position, their own education will not end. Mr Colburn's generous endowment allows for the professor's education to be continued, studying, possibly several times per year, overseas with the renowned Francois Rabbath.
This is a very exciting event to keep track of for all of us double bassists! It isn't often that we are able to anticipate such an important event in this community and I hope you all check back for more updates!

I've never heard of Edward Merritt or Robert Caplin. I looked them up on google but couldn't find their bios anywhere. Does anyone know why David Moore even left? I know he teaches at USC too but why leave Colburn? Roman Patkolo would be pretty crazy though!

Considering the financial support offered by Colburn, as well as the overall caliber of the students, I'd be very surprised if they hired anyone who lacked extensive teaching credentials. Still waiting on the official word from the school.

One can only speculate in regards to David Moore's reasons for leaving, but perhaps Biggie said it best - mo money mo problems.
