Don't mean to offend any of the rabid anti-sixstringers around here, but you ought to check out Vintage Guitar magazine. I've been a subscriber for a dozen years now. Recently they began a regular feature titles "401(K) Guitars" that has good guidelines for investing in collectible instruments. And yes, they regulary feature vintage and collectible basses (this month's cover story, in fact), as well as the sixstrings.
The magazine also annually publishes THE price guide for collectible stringed instruments (guitars, basses, mandos and ukes).
