Coloring Walnut?

You could be on to something. Has the OP confirmed that it is indeed walnut? If it is swamp ash, it would bleach out much lighter and could be stained almost any color. Not sure about the black and sanding though.....Id have to see it.

The black just enhances the grain, here's a tele i built for my wife. After sanding off the black, i stained the maple dark blue and removed most of that. She wanted that worn jeans look.

Happy to see the final choice. I want to see new pictures after you get the maple pieces!

Puzzled?.....You should be!.....

Jon made me a beautiful maple pg cover and thumb rest....

He also made me a beautiful black pickup cover....(See pic above)....

What happen was that I was taking the pickguard cover over to the bass and dropped it.........stood on it...:eek:....and picked it up to realize that it was split into two pieces straight down the center....:eek::eek:........

Jon very kindly offered to make a replacement, but when I saw the improvement that the black pup cover had made to the looks of the bass on its own...(Yes Jon....You were right).....I've decided to keep it "as is"....

Sorry to disappoint you maple lovers....

I’ve been a woodworker for a long time, and I’m not a fan of making wood into something it doesn’t want to be. Want light wood? Use light wood. Want dark wood? Use that.

Maple stained to look like walnut doesn’t look like walnut. It looks like maple stained to look like walnut.

OP, you want an instrument with a tinted flame-maple finish. Walnut will never give you that appearance. I think you’re best off trading.

I've learned to love it with only the change to the pickup cover thanks to @Jon Clegg
