Combining Fishman Fluence pickups + Darkglass Tone Capsule

Hello everyone,

I'm building a custom bass with a luthier, and we have a question about the electronics. We plan to install the Fishman Fluence 6-string bass pickups:
Fluence 6 String Bass Pickups - Fishman
and we would like to add the Darkglass Tone Capsule preamp:
Tone Capsule – Darkglass Electronics

I’ve contacted both companies. Fishman told me that their pickups are specifically designed to work with their own preamp for the best sound, but it is possible to connect them to the Darkglass preamp.
Darkglass, on the other hand, sent me a wiring diagram (I’ll attach it at the end of this post).

We have basic knowledge of electronics, and we’d like to get the opinion of anyone with more experience with these combinations:
  • Should we stick with the full Fishman electronics and leave out the Darkglass?
  • Or should we go with the Darkglass, knowing that this would mean not using Fishman’s preamp?
  • Are we potentially wasting any of the features or capabilities of either product by combining them this way?

Any advice or experiences would be very helpful. Thanks in advance!

The diagram and instructions from Darkglass below:

The Tone capsule would be wired after the Fishman controls and uses its own specified potentiometers with quick connect headers.
Let's assume the pickups are installed with the Fishman blend and volume and the Tone capsule after that:
It needs to be thought of as placing the Tone capsule between the volume and the output Jack.
The Fishman Bass and Treble pots can be disregarded as the Tone capsule takes care of those adjustments.
With no Fishman tone-pots, the output wire from the blend would be wired to the first lug of the Fishman volume pot.
All of the 9V (and V+ on the Tone Capsule) wires need to be connected together.
All of the GND wires need to be connected together and to the SLEEVE of the output jack.
The yellow wire from the second lug of Fishman volume pot goes to the AUDIO IN on the Tone Capsule.
The AUDIO OUT from the Tone Capsule needs to be connected to the TIP of the Output Jack.

The potentiometers for the Tone capsule are connected to their respective headers on the pcb.

Fishman says this with all their pickups. I added an emg presence on a guitar with fishmans and it sounds great. The fishman preamp is nice but a mid touch would be fun. Not a 100% how much the eq really colors the overall sound but id say it would be fun to tryout at least and if you don't like it can always switch back.

Hi danimourinho,
I'm really interested in how you managed to combine the Fishman and the Darkglass, and especially what the bass sounds like as a result. This is exactly what I'm planning to do as well. Please write about it once it's done.
