Combo shopping

I'm helping out a friend whose too old to use the internet on this one.

Basically he bought the Ampeg 2x10 combo a few months ago at Guitar Center. He said it cost him $650 before taxes but there is no amp in that price range. Its one of these but I'm not sure which.

His complaint is that he has to crank the amp to 8 or 9 just to keep up with his very loud drummer and some Marshalls. I've seen them live before. The guitar players aren't blaring but the drummer is really loud. He plays a jazz bass and an Ibanez active bass. I've seen him play both live and he's barely keeping up with the band.

So something that can fit in the back seat of a sedan and doesn't weigh 2 tons. His budget is about 800 bucks after he returns the Ampeg.

i'd get a PF500 and the biggest cab he can stand to lift...preferably at least a 410. Small bass cabs + loud drummer + Marshalls = no bass.

How about one of the Carvin combos with the BX500 head in it. They are plenty loud and light weight.

I play a GK 2x10 combo and have a 2x10 external cab. It can keep up with all but the rudest of bandmates, I think. Best of all the combo is 33 pounds and the cab is 30 pounds. Easily carried by any able-bodied person. Spent less than 800 on the whole rig.

the problem with a combo amp is the lack of speakers, and that's where the volume is produced. answer- forget the combo amp- use the proper bass rig with at least a 4x10.

Or wait for the new GK MB410. I think either would suffice in both volume and budget.

A MarkBass CMD 102p is a great lightweight choice that can easily get over 2 loud guitarists and a loud drummer. It can also tilt back which makes it easier to hear. There are 2 in the classifieds right now for reasonable money (no affiliation).

I've played with his band with a 1x15 and sounded fine. My amp is also only 55 watts on a good day. His combo just isn't particularly loud.

Ive owned both the MB212 and MB210. If he wants a 1 trip best bang for your buck combo, the MB212 is hard to beat.

WalkAbout Scout maybe with an extension cab or DI. My drummer isn't loud, but I've never gone close to pushing it.

Unfortunately, their are a lot of small amp/cab combinations that are plenty loud, but to buy new $800 won't go very far. Look around for some good used gear from a reliable source.

Thanks and replied. I never buy new and I'm trying to get him to do the same. He's one of those old fashioned folks who feels that you have to buy everything from a store.
