Coming to terms

I was just fiddling around on my bass today (Squier VM P-bass) and I remembered a time about two years ago when I had eight bass guitars at one time! I finally realize how silly it was for me to own that many. Now I just have my pbass and a Spector Euro5 and that's really all I need anymore.

Anybody else kind of come to grips with the fact that they have or have had way more than they need?

I have had over a dozen basses since I started playing. Five at a time was the most. I am currently down to one five string. I plan on adding one four string and one travel bass. That will be more than enough for any genre or situation that could ever present itself.

My epiphany came when I saw all those basses on a stand and thought "i don't even play all of these at home, let alone on gigs or recordings"

I was up to 6 and made the same move. This is what I'd play out with and all I have it covers everyting I need!

I really only have one I don't play. It is a Takamine acoustic. It got sent to the bench when I fell in love with a Mike Kelly Dragonfly 5 fretless.
Right now it is an 2007 American J, a Squire VM V J with flats, the Mike Kelly, and a thin line upright. I also have the use of a 2000 MIM P. I have been thinking about getting rid of the Takamine and the upright. The upright is nice to have, but a real pain to lug around and takes up a whole lot of room.

Most I've ever had was 12. Hovered right around 8 for about a year, and now I'm down to 5. It will be a while before I'm ready to sell any of these, but I'd like to get down to one bass some day.

I acquire instruments but I never part with old ones. I guess I am sentimental/a collector(pack rat?). But I love them. Each bass or guitar I have was something I really wanted for one reason or another. They are all special to me. But still, I only use one bass for rehearsal and performance. A 90's Yamaha BB450. There is one instrument I consider dropping, a Danelectro 63 Baritone. I never play it. But it is cool and it is the only Baritone guitar I have.

I have three: my Eastman upright (for old-school rock, jazz, and acoustic stuff like bluegrass or folk), my Pedulla Thunderbolt 6 with TI flats (for electric jazz and chordy stuff), and my Carvin PB5 with rounds (for aggressive hard rock and slap [sue me, I like the sound of a slapped P bass]). Most of my bases are covered, if you'll pardon the pun.

I'd like to get one or two more basses eventually, but it's more of a want than a need. I'd like another four or five string to put thuddier flats like LaBellas on for motown and hip hop, and I'd like a seven or eight string to really explore chording and tapping like this dude:

Had that epiphany about a month ago. Now, all I own is a Fender MIM/Squier Frankenstein P (more of a project than anything) and a Fender American Deluxe Jazz V

Coming to terms is rather difficult if you have incurable GAS. But I get it for sure. I could get by with one P bass today. But then I'm in a band.. so I had to have a backup P, lol. I'm one of those dummies who believes that every good bass deserves a backup.

Yes big time. I was up to I think 9 a year ago. I had 2 MIA P basses a 78' another a 08'. A 74' musicmaster, a 90's Vista Musicmaster, a Dano longhorn, a few SQ Squiers, a few MIK Squiers ..ok more than 9 :laugh:

But when I walked away from music and bought a fishing boat I needed money for equipment and taxes so I sold all of them but a highly modded MIK Squier which is my main player today.

Do I miss them? No, well maybe the SQ's since it took me a few years to find 3 of them. The modded MIK truly is one of the best playing and sounding Fender clones I have ever owned. It's better than the 70's or 08' MIA P basses I sold. I was trying to make my version of a "Roadworn" and I did it on the cheap.

Last week I bought a really cool retro 82' Ibanez RB 620 for $140.00. I love the light weight and how it feels like a short scale although its a 32" length. I will stop now. I need no more basses :D

when I gave up the Ego of trying to impress people with my fancy rather expensive toys ... I just took away want I learned and built my own parts basses from parts I know and like ... !! much more satisfying for the average bassist that I am ...
