comments that make you feel really good about your gear

Both times my band has been on tour, we have played relatively big shows in Los Angeles. Both show, we have had the same guy as a sound guy/stage manager. His name is Oscar, he has been touring with bands since the 80s, as a sound tech/stage manager. When he's not on the road, he hires out his services around L.A. He is apparently a really well know, reputable guy for such things in the metal scene. From what I've seen, he really has his act together and knows what he's doing.

The last time we played in L.A. it was a big festival. The schedule was tight, load in/set up/tear down/load out had to be fast and smooth. We've got it down to a science, so that was no problem. Oscar comes over to my 70's Sunn rig and starts to hook it up direct, then stops and says "man, these things sound good enough on their own, i'll just mic it".

Having a guy who has worked with pro musicians all over the world for the last 25 years and has probably seen just about every brand of amp say that about my rig made me feel kinda awesome.

i like when people who have been playing alot longer than me use or hear my amp an say oh wow what do you use or wow that amps got so much tone,makes me glad i picked it now.

considering i play with a pick i beg too differ,but clearly amp choice makes a difference i just like when i get comments on how my rig sounds an questions on make ect from more experianced players,part of its player part gear.

got a lot of comments on my markbass minimark . . . even had a sound guy not believe it was a bass amp to the point of getting pissed at me for not using the house hartke rig (that looked like it was dragged from behind a car)

Maybe he didn't have a direct box so he had no choice.

When did he say anything about validating self-esteem!? That's a tortured characterization stretched to make a condescending and inapplicable point. After all, it's not like he endorses some questionable audio grade electrical receptacle or anything.

I guess someone whose profile states: "The first 91% of all Talk Bass members are wankers" would feel compelled to try to rain on any parade he encounters. You stated that it takes all kinds to make the world turn. Unfortunately so.

The best comment I had was a few weeks ago. I brought my Berg 1x12 and my LMII and behind my amp was this 4x10...everyone in the audience thought I was using the 4x10, I had people come up to me and tell me I sounded great and all that and wanted to look at the 4x10 and I had to show'em it wasn't that (and yet everyone blown away at what I got out of my set up).

Funny you mention the PA thing, there was another show I did and I had 2 1x12's with my LMII...absolutely awesome amp to run, seriously. Anyway, we soundcheck and the soundman asks if I want anything specific in my monitors and seriously, I asked for 'more bass' because hey, I want to hear what's in front of me, not what's playing to my ass...anyway his response "You've got thousands of dollars worth of bass gear and you want more bass?"

I then realized I just had to turn myself up. The rest of the band didn't complaint lol

A guitarist I used to play with had a beat up old head and cabinet that sounded fantastic but could get ear-bleedingly loud - and he loved to turn it up and drown me out.

I bought my current head and cabs and couldn't wait for our next practice session. My cabinets only weigh about 32 pounds and he grabbed one to bring it onto his house. As soon as he felt he was busting my stones for buying something so wimpy and he wouldn't let up. His son was sitting on drums with us and we started playing. As usual his volume kept creeping up, so I'd turn mine up a little.

It wasn't long before I got to enjoy two reactions - both nonverbal. Money friend was visibly pissed off that a) he wasn't drowning me out and b) that my wimpy lightweight rig was keeping up. The other was watching hos son throw down his drumsticks and walk away from the kit. We got so loud you could hardly hear him at all even though we could see him pounding on the drums and cymbals. Thankfully that only lasted a few minutes or we would have gone deaf. Childish, but I enjoyed it.

But really, I'm just tickled when I hear that I kept a solid bottom end or that my bass sounded great. That never gets old.

Comment from reputable pro sound guy during St Paddy's week gigs: "Man, I love modern bass rigs; got a clean DI out that make my job easy."

That was during set-up. Later on: "You sound great, but you're stage volume limits what I can do with the rest of the mix. I'll put a little more of you in the monitors, if you want it, but you've gotta turn down."

I later got a lot of audience responses that the bass sounded awesome. Of course, it did happen to be my 'wick limited edition, which sound guy also raved about.

Quote from hubby's bassist when he borrowed my rig. He has a big ol' Ampeg, but was working in our area and didn't have time to drive all the way around the lake to go get his. He was very pleasantly surprised!
