Community XLT55 Q?

Ok, our new band just came into 2 of these subs. Very nice. I noticed they have the usual sub inputs (Speakon+1/4") and I also see a full range output. So I'm guessing I can hook up a regular full range cab to that output. So, is it that easy a setup? Run a single amp in stereo, one channel feed to each sub and then connect full range cabs to each of the full range outputs? Will the internal crossover filter out the full range frequencies to the sub?
 
It's strange, it seems that the XLT55 does not have an internal crossover, but rather that the outputs are hi-passed at 150Hz. As such, the "full range outputs" are most certainly not full range, but rather hi-passed.

It seems that the manufacturers intention was that one could do as a you suggested, running the power amp to the sub and then a running the tops off the "full range output."

However, if you do this, I don't think the subwoofer will be low-passed.

The manual makes very little sense to me, here it is anyway:

I know their contractor models the Veris series quite well. The subs do have a crossover and can accept a full range amp input on its own. Using an active electronic cross over is always preferred to using an internal passive version. These are actually really nice subs and would work really nicely with a 12" two-way box on top. This is a really good sounding cost effective series of boxes.

True. No crossover but there is a 150 hz HPF to feed a full-range or "mains" enclosure. Seriously, I'd go with an inexpensive rackmount crossover on this deal.

From the manual......

High-pass output (150Hz and above) for connecting a full range loudspeaker when using a single amplifier to power both the subwoofer and full-range loudspeaker.

On the cab itself, the jack is marked Full Range and not High Pass. Are you sure there is no semblance of a crossover inside the cab? How would this be achieved?

Edit: The manual does mention a crossover (page 12 Item 4.6). Also see diagram C on page 18. Shows Mixer>Amp>Sub>Full Range Out

On another note, how would I hook up an external crossover?

Just want to note that we're most likely NOT going to run our system this way but in case we lose an amp. I'd like to have options. Gonna play with it when I get a chance. Downside is no independent volume control.
 
Regarding the jack marked "full range output," I believe it refers to the fact that it is intended that the user feed that output to a set of full range tops, regardless of the fact that the output is in fact not full range.

I am still very confused about the crossover, as the manual seems very vague. I can't tell whether the crossover part only applies to the full range speakers or also the subs.

Regarding the use of an external crossover:
If you are running in mono, the signal chain is as follows:

Board --> External Crossover
Hi out of crossover to power amp(s) to mains
Lo out of crossover to power amp(s) to subs

My common sense bug is telling me there is a crossover in the sub. How could it separate low pass from high pass without one? I agree, the manual is vague as it is for several products and not just the subs. In any case, I'm going to pull out the panel on the back to investigate. My gut tells me there is a crossover in there.
 
If you look at 11.2 / page 37 under subwoofer models 51 & 55, the crossover is listed as "High Pass Output 150 hz" which is just that, a high pass filter. Mains models 41 & 48 both have bona fide crossovers spec'd @ 12 db/octave, 2 kHz.

From the description in the manual, there is no low pass filter for the subs. If this is true, it's essentially a full-range enclosure with significant high end roll-off betweenst 200-300 hz by design and character of the cab.

I think Zooberwerx is correct.

The subs seem to only have a integral hipass filter on the outputs.
As a result, running a full range signal into the subs will work, but may sound rather funny because you are then depending on the roll off of the cab, which is by no means linear.

A hipass filter is common and does not mean that there is a lowpass along with it. A crossover is two filters, one hipass and on lowpass.

I think you will be much better off with either an external crossover or a lowpass filter on the subs.
