I made a little video to compare my basses on a track. Excuse the poor playing - I spent so long working out how to record and sync video that I was losing the will to live. Nevertheless it should give some useful discussion points!

So here you are -
G&L SB1, vol 80%, tone 60%, Labella 760fx strings
Stingray, vol 70%, bass centred, treble backed off a tiny bit, Elixir 40-95
Celinder, Vol/Vol max, bass boosted 10%, treble cut 10%, Elixir 40-95

They all sound good, thanks for sharing!

I think I like them in the order of appearance.

Gimme the SB-1

I get a sense that your right hand finds the sounds of the G&L the most natural to control - the articulation sounds confident and relaxed, like you have an instinct command of the instrument. With the Stingray, you sound a tiny bit more measured and conscious of what you're doing.

That's a great observation. Honestly the clips are a pretty poor show playing-wise; I had spent half the day beforehand trying to switch my entire system around a new mixer and I was getting REALLY frustrated with iMovie too, so I really wan't at my best - but you're right; the SB1 is like an old jumper and something about the neck and the strings just feels so right, and I think the nature of the sound makes me think it's more forgiving of 'mistakes' or at leats it hides them better (just in my head - certainly watching back, it doesn't!).

Cheers

I liked them all, but probably the Stingray lease of the three. The mids are a little honky for my taste. Probably you could EQ it out, but why fight the natural voice of the instrument? I think all three of these basses are also setup in a way that I like. I like the "rasp" that you are getting when you want it. That's low action. Nothing else will do that for you.
