Compatible amp and speaker enclosure

New member here so go easy on me if that's possible

I've been playing in bands since i was 13 and just about to turn 53 and only recently returned to the scene as old band members wanted to gig a few more times before we all get past it

Anyway, my question is this. Since i started playing i've only ever owned bass combos although at one stage i owned a Trace elliot rig which was purchased from a very competent bass player so i was confident the whole rig was compatible. Recently i thought i'd splash out and buy a new rig but i've had several issues with it. To start with the cabinet started making noises which led me to believe that the cones were damaged. The company took back the rig for testing and discovered that 2 of the cones where touching (this is above my technical level) so they replaced the cones and returned the rig. I went to test it out on Saturday and putting it through its paces again there appears to be more issues with the speaker.

I'm assured that the rig is compatible but could someone in the know have a look at the specifications of the head and cabinet to ensure that they are. My fear is that the rig isn't compatible and the head is blowing the cones or damaging them. Below is the details of the rig

Peavey Mini Mega 1000 watt head
2000 watts peak
1000 watts (RMS) 4 ohms

Peavey Headliner 410 Cabinet
Max power 800 watts
Impedance 8 ohms

Warwick Corvette 4 string passive bass

Any help would be greatly appreciated

This is not a match that I would recommend… the unfortunate issue is that it’s hard to determine due to the marketing aspects of how the power of the amp and speaker power handling are presented.

The amp is rated at 750 watts RMS at 8 ohms, the cabinet is 8 ohms and rated at 400 watts RMS. This is from digging into the specs past the marketing numbers.

Yes, it’s possible to damage the speaker with the amp, but there may be other factors as well (including the amp or speaker being defective).

I would recommend the Mini MAX as a better choice with your cabinet. It’s surprising m, but I don’t see any cabinets listed on Peavey’s website that I would consider a good match for the Mini MEGA, perhaps there are some models missing?

I was suspect of the fact that the 2 might not be compatible if pushed for any length of time. I'm not technically minded so it was hard for me to tell without getting someone else's help and knowledge.

The only other cabinet i've seen is the Peavey PVH 410 1200 watt cabinet. Would this be more suitable or would adding another headliner 410 to the one i have already make a difference?

They used to have cabinets that were a good match, but don’t see them anymore.

IMHO, Peavey does a poor job of posting amp and cabinet output/capability (specs).
They use terms like "max power" and "peak power". This can be confusing as most respectable mfgs use RMS ratings @2/4/8 OHMS. I'm not saying Peavey isn't respectable and, IME, their products have always been a good value, but they should make it a bit easier to compare "apples to apples".

I have no idea what marketing fantasy terms like that mean when trying to match up gear. Personally I also like to know both the thermal and mechanical power ratings, but very few manufacturers provide that information.

It's a 600 watt RMS cabinet. Program power is a marketing metric that is 2X the RMS value. Your amp is rated in RMS metrics.

If it's a 4 ohm 410, than no. Now there's another bit of detail that appears to be in question. Some info says that it's a 4 ohm cabinet and some says that it's an 8 ohm cabinet, I don't know which one is right, or if perhaps there were 2 versions.

IF it's the 8 ohm version, than it's probably close enough to be ok (600 watts for the cabinet and 750 watts for the amp into 8 ohms). If it's a 4 ohm cabinet than I would suggest not.

They're just "puffing". I always get a chuckle when I see certain 2000 watt heads advertised for $300 NEW!

That amp is capable of destroying two of the headliner 410's at the same time.
Anything close to half volume OR boosted bass OR added KOSMOS will be stressing the cab.

I don't have experience with the current Peavey/Trace Elliot bass cabs (Peavey owns and manufactures Trace Elliot, now).

I have played a Minimega. That amp is a hammer.

Perhaps @Fred from Peavey could recommend a cab or cabs that would be a good match with the Minimega. (Anything that would match well with the new, 1200 Watt Trace head should, incidentally, also work safely with the Minimega.)

Sorry it took me awhile to reply - been traveling .... top secret note we are working on a Peavey cab capable of handling the full power of the MiniMega, kinds excited about that. The new Trace Pro 410 cabs are what I would recommend for the time being - they are killer and will certainly handle the power. Over the years I have used the Headliner 410 as well, if you have two of them they do pretty well...no you can get into trouble over powering them, but if you know what to listen for (clipping) they are an inexpensive way to get a wall of bass.

The new Trace Pro 410 cabs are what I would recommend for the time being - they are killer and will certainly handle the power. Over the years I have used the Headliner 410 as well, if you have two of them they do pretty well...no you can get into trouble over powering them, but if you know what to listen for (clipping) they are an inexpensive way to get a wall of bass.

Thanks for getting back to me Fred. Yes i think i'm going to have to double the enclosures up until Peavey come up with something to handle the head. It's not like i'm going to be using it anyway near to the limit of the head.
