complete idiot on CL!

saw an ad on CL today for a 'viola bass' -
there is apic of the bass with the headstock not in the shot and this text

Viola Electric Bass Guitar not bad condition for it's era. The guitar is missing one piece for the bridge which you can order the piece. Great for any music collector. Make me an offer within reason.

I emailed and asked about brand..and got back

no name on it , 1970's

Other than the area on the knobs looks odd, it looks like any/all other 'beatle' basses i've seen. The local GC has new epiphone on the wall for $319. this on is missing parts and can't be played. No clue the brand - and my experience has been if they don't put a name on it then it's a cheap thing be that a guitar or a place or a shirt.

So I google and bridge/strings will run $120 ish. I offer $50 sight unseen and get an email back mf's my ****** lowball offer.

I email back with my explantion (similar to what I've stated here) and get back "well, i have the parts and a friend is a luthier and can put it together for me"

OK...so do that - how much do you want? What BRAND is it? Since they make this type of instrument from $200 to $1500 the brand has a lot of impact on it's value.

I get an email back saying 'IT'S NOT FOR SALE I JUST HAD A GREAT OFFER.....' - in caps like that.

Idiot.
YOu don't know what it is, it's broken, you can get it fixed but chose not too, you excluded part of it from your (square) picture (so you cropped it out I think on purpose).
and you have the balls to call my offer low?

I have to assume it's low end unit worth $150-200 in working condition. Take off for parts/repairs and what's it worth? $50 is generous...

A good deal...a reasonable human being...

I got a yahama RBX375 last week...now it took a week of me pestering him to get a meeting, but $160 worked for me.

I've bought/sold a number of things on CL and am used to a lowballer in person - apparently that has moved to email as I'm selling a camera lens ($850, new is $1050 plus tax/shipping) and got an offer for 450 and the seems to think i was an idiot for not taking his offer... Offer $700 cash and I might take it, but 450?

IN the bass ad he has no price...so what did he expect?

I could place an ad - "For sale - camaro, needs work. seeking reasonable offers" and I'd expect useless responses. Now if I put it '84 camaro project, unfinished. extra parts. Never started, new eng/trans/exhaust/suspension. Have $7k invested. Make offer" I'd expect somewhat better offers. Since i plan to run such an add come april may we'll see how it goes. I'll take $500 if that's all I get offered so I'm not gonna cry over low ball offers. I know it's a project and I want it gone.

So why'd you go through all that instead of just buying one from GC?

I'm assuming you mean new, which is a good decision. That Epi one is the BOMB!!

On a semi-related note, the used section for Guitar Center is WAAAAAAY better than the Craigslist ones. YMMV depending on area, but I find far better deals and can get any of those items shipped by GC that are displayed on their site. You also get far more peace of mind that it will work or you'll be taken care of if it doesn't, as opposed to CL where you basically got stiffed if it craps out on you later.

Been my experience to - the dearborn store had schector through neck 5 string for $450 a while back....bought my son an acoustic instead. Boought my BP355 used at the local store.

So...what's their deal if I want, say an acoustic 450 used? They list 3 but dont' say where they are...not local for sure. Do I buy sight unseen? (I'm beginning to trust them, but still...)

Yeah, $319 on the beatle bass is tempting, but I need an amp more.

Just checking CL to see what's new.
A beatle bass would be cool - but I need an amp more. But if the price is right...

If it s a rogue or even an epi it's what, $250-350 new? What's a 'kit' guitar worth? 1/4 of that? Less?

$50. Add in $120-140 in parts and I'll have $170-200 in it- fair, but not outstanding. GC has a used hofner for $249. Maybe $50 was even a high offer - I didn't want to insult the seller.:D
