Completing my music room...Retirement, here I come!

Alesis Nitro Max electronic drum set will soon be mine. It will be placed in the left corner of my music studio.

I started my musical adventure over 50 years ago, playing my friend's drums as a young child before I switched to guitar, then bass. I also learned to play the piano we had out in our patio. As a multi instrumentalist, I will have everything I need to write and record music.

I mostly played bass for over 45 years with other bands because I loved playing drums so I really dig the rhythm section in bands, locking in with the drums. Now I can do it all. I already have a 6 string guitar, 4 and 6 string basses, a full size electronic Roland piano, a Yamaha synthesizer and soon a new electronic drum kit. I will be putting it into the left corner of my music studio. I'll still have plenty of room for a full band to rehearse in as needed/wanted.

I'm retiring in 30 days so I'm getting my room all set up.

Anyone else play multiple instruments and have a full size studio with which to write, record, jam, practice in? Show me what you have!

I'm especially imrpessed with the fact that you have space visible on your floor. I let G.A.S. get the best of me and now the excessive gear is more of a detrement to my happiness than it should be.

Well... maybe my wife's happiness.... but you know the old saying... Happy wife...

Because she knows when I sleep and where all the sharp objects are in the house.

Rookie... you can actually walk through that room But that doesn't mean I'm not jealous.

Doubtful. I'm also a visual artist (over 45 years as a professional artist) and plan on getting back to painting again too. On the other end of the room (behind me in that music room photo), I have my painting easel/desk too! It's the second largest room in the lower level of our finished basement. And it's ALL mine!

Hey congrats on the retirement!
I retire in '27 and have been madly working on my music room as well. Doing so has inspired tremendous GAS, but I haven't used up all my retirement funds yet...

Thanks. I was on hiatus from music and gigging but came back to bass playing. Hard to find bands to join, or musicians to form a new one around here, but I do a lot of writing and recording (mostly parts for other original bands/musicians), so this has been in the works for quite a while. I just lacked the time to really dive deep into it.

Now I finally can and I can find many ways to be involved in music around here, and I'll have all this if I can't. Good luck on your soon to be retirement. Start planning it now.

Congrats! I have a reasonably similar setup but am a long way from retirement, so my time to enjoy it is much more sporadic. Very jealous!

I "officially" retired several years ago. That lasted five months. lol I returned to work in a different capacity and still work part-time nowadays (generally 10-20 hours per week). Congratulations!

our place has a really big kitchen that can easily fit a dining table ... which frees up our dining room to use as a musical room!

no door, it's open to the common areas of the house. there are a couple of musicians in our household so it sees daily use and is a very nice part of the evenings when music time rolls around!

so far we've shoehorned an electric piano, a couple of amps, a 5 piece drum kit, and a bunch of string instruments in there.

I can pop up a little recording station but i'm still figuring out how to optimize a station for my LDC mic.

I can relate. I've had a music studio in my home(s) for as long as I can remember, but having four kids and now 4 grandchildren, I was always getting booted out of many different rooms to accommodate the family.

But being empty nesters now, this room is all mine from now on. We have an empty room upstairs for a guest bedroom/kids playroom and my music room can remain locked and ready to use.

Hang in there. I've only waited decades for this to finally happen!

When my music "room" was relegated to our living room (but needed to be modular so I could put it away and out of reach of our grandkids), I made this recording station out of an antique magazine rack!

I do have the ability to direct any of my instruments to audible monitors, but most of what I do is sent to headphones.

How do the drums and bass sound in that room with hardwood floors?

Well, to be honest, while I can play many different instruments, none are to the level of skill that I have on bass. Which is why I write more music on my 6 string bass (strung EADGCF) than either guitar or piano.

As my better half was becoming quite fatigued by my practicing in the basement, and I was struggling to schlep my gear up and down our basement steps, I built a music room/practice studio in a corner of the new pole barn. I love it and am in there almost everyday, I play bass, trombone, euphonium, tuba, drums badly, and some Latin percussion. I'm happy, she's happy…

thanks! the drums and the piano are my kiddo's, he started drums when he was maybe 5... the heads are padded and he has a fairly light touch, he's more of a jazz/clave kind of guy. he rocks a bit from time to time but he's not a basher. tbh it's been a real luxury to have a kit inside the house.

we originally had the drums directly on the wood and yes you would hear the floor and the pedal pieces would 'walk away', now there's the rug and a carpet pad and it does a pretty good job of isolating the kit. since this room is really wide open on one side and we can open that window too it seems to stage pretty nicely. as far as bass again i'm not competing with a loud drummer so everything sounds pretty clean. the bass will wake up the drum pieces and I sometimes have to disengage the chain on the snare but I don't hear too much floor.

kiddo has started using headphones with his keys, I like to hear the room and don't use headphones unless i'm recording something but I just keep a reasonable tone and it sounds musical. I can play all night and not bother anybody.
