Compressor before or after fuzz/distortion

Never been a pedal guy, mostly plug and play.
But I'm trying to test the waters a little.
Should the setup be
Bass-distortion-compressor-amp
Bass-compressor-distortion-amp
Or is it a matter of preference?

Before. Use the compressor to clean up the sound then distort it again. If you run it after it will squash the distortion and will just be a lo-fi hum.
