Compressor: EBS Multicomp vs Pigtronix Philosopher Bass

I only tried the Multicomp. It´s not my thing but it´s very plug-and-play and easy to use, so you´ll enjoy no hard headaches. I think that the great feature is the multiband mode. It´s just me. I don´t tried the Philosopher so I can´t oppine about this.

I think that you´d take a look just to the reviews that Bongo made about the compressors. It´s a real guide very interesting and complete.

The EBS is great if you want to quickly switch between light and heavy compression with little fuss or dial switching. It's pretty much a one knob compressor.
There are other compressors out there which offer better metering and more control. But in the world of dual band compression, there's the old Trace Elliot unit, this EBS unit and the very hard to source (and long waiting list) FEA labs Dual band compressor.
Personally, I went for the EBS unit while I wait for my FEA to be available.

Not familiar with the Pigtronix (but I like the name), so I cannot comment on that.
I have, however, been using the EBS comp for probably 8 or 9 years now and still like it a lot.
It is indeed a rather simple 2 knob plug-n-play device, nothing complicated.
The three band function is a nice addition (normal, multi-band, tube simulation) and especially the latter adds some serious punch to my tone.
You can hear yourself a lot better, it really helps to tighten things up in a busy mix. Hence, I don't have to play so awfully loud.
I never leave home without it. Have also used it for recording and it worked great. However, it is a rather sublte comp, which means it doesn't "pump" but it makes all my basses sound significantly better.

Thanks guys. I'll give the EBS a try. The Pigtronix compressor has some interesting stuff so I was wondering if anybody could lay out the differences. Unfortunately, I'll have to order online as the music stores around here are pretty limited and it's just not worth a long drive to try out pedals.

Love my MultiComp, haven't found anything that can replace it yet.

One bad thing about the Pigtronix pedals is that they require 18volts to work right. They come with an adapter, but if you want to use a OneSpot you're out of luck and if you want a dedicated pedal power supply you have to make sure it can supply 18volts.

Thanks guys for the nudge to get a Multi Comp. Just pulled the trigger. I was listening to some recordings from my playing several years ago with my EBS HD350 head which has a simplified version of the EBS compression in it. That head has an articulate sound I miss. I am in a situation now where I just plug in and go in ears. I hope the MultiComp can give me some articulation.

For me the Pigtronix is fantastic. It's perfect for fingerstyle so it fits with my style of playing.

The EBS is great as well. I personaly like the blend option of the Pigtronix and the slight coloration to the sound.

I didnt care so much for the "grit" before but after a while I realized that even though this is not my favorite distorted sound it doesnt get lost in the mix when I play with my band. Which is a valuable asset for bass disto.
