compressor for punch

il looking for a compressor go get a little more punchy tone. i heard the punch factory is a good pedal but very transparent and you can hardly hear it. the ebs seems to be another favorite but i would like to spend a little less. and i have looked through the compression thread but it is HUGE.

If you crank up the Punch Factory's "Drive" knob, its presence CAN be heard quite well, and get VERY punchy. It's one of the few comps I've used that allows for intense compression settings without distorting. While it's not as extreme as some other compressors out there, it's great for limiting, tonal enhancement, quality signal compression, and yes, heavy punch as well (if you so choose to crank up the "Drive" knob). Many of the complaints out there come from the fact that it is really meant to be more of a studio-style compressor, and not really a tone-coloring compression effect (although it can be pushed into the "effect" range to some degree).

I normally use it as a moderate compressor. Not everyone likes it because it hardly colors your sound; for some people, that's a wonderful thing, though! I like my tone to sound like my tone even when I'm setting the Punch Factory on heavier settings!

My PF does wonders at allowing me to play louder and have a punchier tone. You certainly notice the difference after playing for awhile with the pedal on and turning it off.

Great pedal, just have to want what it has to offer.

so the punch factory is a good pedal to go for a punchy tone? or should i look into something else. becasue i have heard all good things about the punch factory only bad thing was the transparency issue. but if i need to crank the drive then il just do that.

my budget is around 100

When it comes to recording, transparency is never an "issue" :smug:

But yeah, I'd say give it a whirl. I doubt you'll regret it. Of course, if you later decide you really want more of an intense, effect-style compressor (which WILL change your tone, in most cases), you'll find plenty of people on TB who would jump at the opportunity of owning your Punch Factory :D

but, i do want an effect style compressor... :hmm:

i would just snag the punch factory and try it out, but i am REALLY low on cash so i dont have that much to mess around with. can i get the names of some more intense compressers so i can do a couple searches on them and compare between that and the punch factory a little. thanks.

Briefly, the transparent ones are supposed to be completely un-noticeable. They do their job but you never consciously hear it. The "effect-y" ones on the other hand have noticeable artifacts such as unusually articulated attack or decay to each note, a "squishy" action, thickening of the tone, distortion on the attack, a volume dip followed by a swell, exaggerated harmonics or string noise, etc.

It would be nice to have a "listening gallery", but I don't have the time to make one these days.

Lotta people who dislike and like the Boss CS-2. I'm in the "like" column. I picked one up used on eBay. Usually plentiful their for a range of new and used prices. One thing's for sure, you can find lots of great feedback from posters on TB about settings and suggestions on the CS-3. Good luck.
