Double Bass Concertgebouw

Does anyone know what happened in Amsterdam at the recent Concertgebouw Orchestra Principal audition? I know there were two Americans in the finals, which is interesting since they'd probably take a pay cut if they won...

One of our guys, Dave Sheets (Baltimore Symphony), was a finalist. Another was Colin Corner from the Minnesota Orchestra.

Hi Cory - That was a blast having you guys with us for the Rite of Spring and Strauss' Alpinesymphony recently. Great playing from you guys at Peabody!

Dave was in the finals but didn't know who, if anyone, was selected. I believe he said in addition to the 2 from the US, there was one student of one of their section bassists, and a fellow named Edmund (?) from London whose audition was scheduled at another date.

So perhaps they'll have trial weeks and go from there, if that's even how they do it over there. As for the former principal, it probably depends on who you ask! In any case its cool that there were americans in the finals!! I hope one of them gets it! (which of course would leave us a great job to audition for!)

Niek de Groot is teaching at the Folkwang Hochschule in Essen ,Germany. He is a great player and as far as I know he will continue as a soloist, chamber musiscian aso.

The player from england won the job but for some reason they moved her position to the tutti. The other player who was in the final, Olivier Theirry studies with Niek de Groot. With the two americans, that's a pretty formidable group of finalists. Its a pity that the stage at the Concertgebouw is really uncomfortable for bassists. Great sounding hall, but you are always shaking rosin powder from you hair from the player behind you.

the girl that won the tutti position (and it was a tutti position, not the principal job--for that they ended up hiring no one) is English and her name is Georgie Poad. She studied with the late Corin Long.

I guess this is not really relevant to the thread, but I played there with a full 8 bass section and LOVED IT. I guess it is all a matter of opinion, but I strongly disagree with you.

The risers are big and tall, that is true, but I found that I could see and hear everyone in the orchestra.

I have never played in a hall that sounded better, and most orchestras/conductors would love to trade places with the Concertgebouw Orchestra.
