Concerts that surprised you

Biggest surprise and biggest disappointment were at the same concert.
Monsters of Rock '88, Alpine Valley, East Troy WI. The lineup was Kingdom Come/Dokken/Metallica/Scorpions/Van Halen.
The biggest surprise was how much fun the Metallica and Scorpions were, both were on their "A" game and were a blast.
Dokken and Van Halen were huge disappointments. Dokken appeared to be fighting amongst themselves and due to technical issues Lynch chucked his guitar down and left the stage early. Van Halen also had some tech issues and just didn't seem to care there were people still waiting for a show.
Throw in the sunburn from a day of tailgating and it was a concert I could have missed overall.

The Good:
-The Tubes - Completion Backwards Principle Tour. Fee Waybill was on fire and the band was tight!
-Ozzy - Blizzard of Oz tour - I stood in front of Randy Rhodes for almost two hours and couldn't take my eyes off of him. Such effortless playing and dead on.
The Bad -
I worked three Stones shows during the Steel Wheels tour. it was like watching paint dry.

I saw the same Monsters of Rock tour in 1988 at Giants Stadium in New Jersey. I was a teenager and had a hell of a time.

Jimmy Buffett opening for the Eagles. Margaritaville had just come out, and Jimmy was pumped, fresh, and ready to rock. The Eagles were already vers. II, post Bernie Leadon, and more than a bit boring- Robotic reproductions of their records.
Back in the days when the musicians union used to actively work FOR the musician, my good friend Hurricane Mike Thompson got a call from the union. Ringo and the all-starrs needed a harmonica player that night. Mike took the call. Highlight of his career (even over playing steel for Shania!), and good resume fodder.Invalid Link Removed. I was 13 when the British Invasion hit. Stones, Kinks, Yardbirds, etc. were my life and being a typical teen I closed my ears to other genres.
Around that time my dad took me to a Los Angeles Philharmonic concert where they performed Tchaikovsky. Didn't really want to go. Ended up LOVING it. I had no idea of the power of a live symphony orchestra.

Saw Trombone Shorty open for RHCP on their last tour. Heard the name, never heard his music. He came out and rocked Little Caesars Arena for almost 40 minutes. It was as good as it was surprising.
My second Frank Zappa concert. Joe's Garage tour, 1980 Paramount Theater, Portland OR.
It was the tour where bands in the area of the tour stop would submit a tape of them playing Joe's Garage and Frank would show up at the winning bands practice place that night after the concert
I was in a band The Reef Aires but, we didn't win 
but, we did know the band that won
So, we showed up and got to see Zappa for a few minutes and he signed the guitar of our guitarist
I wish I had the foresight to bring my bass
And a good time was had by all

When you say surprised I think of "Not expecting much, wasn't who I went to see anyway, but left going.. WOW! I did not see that coming!"
I went to a concert in the early 90's to see Hal Ketchum at the very first Country in the park at San Francisco park. Also on the bill was someone named Martina McBride ( she hadn't broke yet by holy hell was she good! BUT.. not who I'm talking about here . . . ) The Tractors ( these guys were a hoot and were tight as a band as well. LOADS of fun! ) and the headliner . . . Billy Ray Cyrus. Not gonna kid Achey Breaky is catchy but mostly I didn't dig it. HOWEVER the other songs he played were pretty good. The Led Zep cover? LIGHTS OUT! He put on a hell of a show but I left thinking he was better than I ever would have given credit for... and all with a MULLET!
