Conform to Fender?

Okay so ive been playing bass for two years (only 13) and my main bass at the moment is a peavey ac bxp 5 string and I love it but the 4 string I have is a affinity series jazz bass (first bass) which is okay but I want a nicer 4 string so Ive saved 600 with the intent of buying a mim Jaguar (passive one) but started thinking outside the basic predictable fender but the problem is most of what my band covers are tracks with fender basses for example: the ramones, the clash, blink 182, weezer, ect. But I want to know should I go fender or go with something else if so tell me what bass.
Use the force. Whatever feels like destiny is what you should get.

Also, for your budget, a tribute G&L should do you right. Double down and you could get a sweet Fullerton-made bass. Go for it, dude.

Bass players are the only ones who notice that the base tone doesn't match exactly to the record. Nobody in the audience cares, unless they're also a bass player. There are TONS of good basses out there that can approximate those tones, So go play a bunch and buy the one that speaks to you. Then keep doing that until you have all the ones you want. Then keep doing that until you find the next one you want.
Lol. This is both the best and worst advice I've ever read on here.

If you really want a Fender, go for it. If not, just get something that will make you want to play more. You'll have plenty of time to cave and get a Fender when you're older. For now, practicing and jamming with your friends should be your main focus.

Thank you all for your replies I think Im going g&l
Good choice. I tried this out a few weeks ago.
I don't like sunburst, I don't like basses without pickguards, but I liked EVERYTHING about this one.

New price is $700 and change but I see quite a few used ones in excellent shape for much less.
I can't tell you how many times I see people mention this one in "What's the most versatile bass you can buy?" threads, and after playing one, I have to agree...it's a tone master.

I also think there is a 'pro-Fender" bias on TB. As I've posted before, I made a conscious decision to stop using Fenders after a bunch of years with a 60s Precision and it propelled my playing and sound to a much higher level.

If Fender does it for you - that's fine. I was fortunate enough to listen carefully and find other things that gave me more sonic flexibility and better playability. All I'm saying is there are lots of good basses besides Fender.

Fender only.

The thing that impresses me most is that a 13 yo saved $600. For a bass no less. Most kids I know have their money spent before they get it in their hands. Way to go man!

$8 an hour hanging drywall and mowing lawns took me a while but I think it will be well worth it

Well done!!! You are going to do well I think. As others have said, play a lot of basses and buy the one that speaks to you the most. My 10c worth would also be to play as many second hand instruments as you can. You can get some real bargains if you're not in too much of a hurry and that $600 could get you something that costs well in excess of $1000 new.

Except for the very first beginner guitars my daughters have bought all their own instruments. Just over a year ago, when they were 14 and 12 they bought a very nice Maton guitar each. The eldest got an 808 for $1700 and the youngest got a mahogany Mini Maton for $1400. These guitars are very professional gigging instruments from the same manufacturer that Tommy Emmanual plays. They save their money from gigging and invest it in good instruments and PA gear. The eldest also teaches guitar to 5 local youngsters to earn extra money.

Many have mentioned used - I bought and sold used basses until I ended up with what I'm happy with. I would have spent way more buying new, and unless you really find your holy grail new I don't see the point in taking the hit from depreciation each time you buy one.

And unless you are very unusual, you might well end up selling at least a few of the basses you buy.

So another vote for buying used here.

Again thank you all again, the reason for the new bass is because im starting to get more gigs and wanted something new also I think ill follow everyones advice and go try a bunch of different options

The real reason to have a second is so you can display it next to your stack as an "emergency bass" in case the knobs fall off the one you're currently plsying.,

That's what I do. But I only have two brands of basses: Fenders and the ones I build.

I have a MIM Precision with P pickups, a MIA Precision with P pickups, a MIJ(Franken?) Precision with P/J pickups, a MIM Precision with P/J pickups and a MIM Blacktop Precision...and when I play 'em, they all sound like dog vomit...'cause I'm terrible. (I also have to swap them out every 15 minutes 'cause I sweat on 'em so much...and picks? Picks generally last me one song before they're completely sweaty and useless. What a mess.)
As long as your basses are better than I am, you'll be fine. :D

View attachment 914745 Get something different. Get a Fender. It has lots of tone and attitude, is an original design and takes abuse. Starcaster! This one cost $600 with tax. Look hard and they're out there.
Yeah! Watch the Pendowsky test video on YouTube and check out the power of the bridge pick up soloed with no tone
..Jaco is at the door....
Same for the Telecaster bass made on China with The same two humbuckers
