Connect bass to PC via Real Tone Cable

Hi there!

New to the bass, just got my first one (a pre-owned Yamaha RBX374), and since I don't have an amplifier of any sort I'm investigating other possibilities. One that seems rather promising is getting Rocksmith 2014 and then connecting via the Real Tone Cable to my PC. However, I'm not sure how it'll work, googling didn't yield anything and Ubisoft's customer support never answers. So...

Anyone with any experience from Rocksmith 2014 and its cable? Are you able to just plug in your bass to your PC and practice while being able to listen through headset/speakers, without having to play the songs in the game? I think the game in itself will be a nice help for me as a beginner, but I want to be able to just practice / play without having to be limited to the 50 songs that comes with it.

If the answer's no, are there any cheap ways of setting up the bass to the pc without having to buy extra sound cards and whatnot? Less techno-clutter taking up desk space + less money being spent = happy Viessa.

Yes you can do what you want to do. But investigate small practice amps too. Cost difference is probably a flip of the coin.

Try the Alesis cable:

might be better quality than the Rocksmith.
The other choice is to get a small USB mixer, with 2-4 channels. This allow you to play along with MP3's from your computer and use your headphones.
May want to spring for wireless headphones since the cable for the wired headphones always seem to get the way.
