Connecting 2 Audio Interfaces using ADAT. 2x Behringer UMC1820 8channel A.I

hey there. i’m fairly new to the home studio recording game so excuse me if my noobness shows. i’d like to expand my inputs to record a full band. currently have qty2- 8 channel UMC1820. can i connect those with the ADAT optical wire? do i need anything else in order to work properly in my DAW Prootools. Drivers? Setting on DAW? Setting on AI?



i’ve heard that you can connect the Behringer ADA8200 to the UMC1820. but before i buy the ADA8200 i wanted to know if it was possible to connect the former before moving on



any advice would be appreciated. thanks!

You can definitely do this You'll need two optical cables, one for OUT and one for IN to connect to the UMC1820 and ADA8200 ADAT ports:

Then make sure the I/O selector on the 1820 is set to ADAT.

Lastly, set the ADA8000 to SLAVE mode

Kriegs advice is perfect. I would emphasize the need to make sure you set one unit as master and the other as slave.

If you forget, you can still play and record, but their clocks will get out of sync with each other, resulting in noisy artifacts like audible clicks.

This is exactly what I did on my setup, but still no sound coming thru the speakers
I have an ADA8200 hooked up to an 1820, and the inputs on the 1820 give sound just fine, but totally no sound from the ADA8200. I have it set to SLAVE, the button on the front of the 1820 is set to ADAT, I hooked up a synth to ports 1 and 2 of the ADA8200 and I can see signal coming in, so that works.

I also connected two optical cables between the 2 units: from the 1820 OUT to the ADA8200 IN, and from ADA8200 OUT to 1820 IN. I suppose it's cabled correctly ... No idea if I should try other optical cables..?

The Behringer UMC1820 has a 'Monitoring' knob on the front panel with three options:

1. Inputs 1-2 zero latency monitoring
2. Inputs 1-8 zero latency monitoring
3. Playback channels 1-2 from your DAW

Your ADA800 should show up in your DAW as channels 11-18. If you want to hear channels 11-18 in your monitor mix, then you need to route those channels to the monitor mix channels 1-2 in your DAW (and turn the UMC1820 front panel knob to 'PB1-2'). There will be latency.

The Behringer UMC1820 is not a mixer. If you need to mix 16 mics down to 2 channels in real time, with zero latency, for on-stage performance, the best tool for that job is a mixer (not an audio interface). Behringer makes some reasonably priced 16 input mixers, if that's what you need.

For a software only solution on a PC, you can install ASIO4ALL, and I also like to install "ASIO Link Pro"
This can take multiple audio interfaces and combine them into a single aggregate interface your DAW sees.
