Connecting amp to cap

So I've been using an instrument cable to connect my head and cab for quite some time and it seems to work fine. I remember somewhere in the back of my head that this is not good? Can someone explain if there are sonic differences to using a speaker cable or if it will hurt my amp or cab? I feel like I should know this but I don't for some reason. Help!

the shield on an instrument cable is not thick enough to work as a speaker cable for all but the lowest wattage amps. i've done it in a pinch at low volumes, but with the higher wattages associated with many bass amps these days, it can overheat and catch on fire. highly NOT recommended.

I've been running my vintage v-4 through an instrument cable for months now for five-six hours at a time on gigs. No problems, but I'd rather be safe than sorry! Guess I'll go out and pick up a speaker cable before my gig tomorrow!

I have made speaker cables out of just ordinary 14-16 guage electrical wire (think dept. store brown extension cords), just buy a couple 1/4" ends in choice of style .. any issues there ?

Nope, you're fine there. Its the design of the cable for instrument cables that causes the problem. If you're using a high wattage amp I'd aim to 14 gauge cable though.

Two-conductor 14 gauge certainly qualifies as "speaker wire."

Just get a speaker cable. They're not that expensive. And they're also not as liable to catch on fire.

How are you getting 5-6 hour gigs? It seems almost backwards that you're asking this question and most of the people that answer don't play those kinds of gigs... just wondering
