I'm about to put the oil finish on my 1st home built bass and I'm going to put copper shielding tape in the control cavity and pick-up routs. Is it a good idea to put oil finish in these areas prior to the shielding or is it just a waste? Just wondering if this raw wood needs anything even though it won't be touched in normal use.

The first use of finish is sealing the wood from moisture. The copper foil will not keep moisture away, so oil (or something) under the foil is a good idea.
Use the oil finish inside all the cavities, and let it dry completely before you line it with the copper foil.
Also, make sure you try to sand those pockets as smooth as you can, so the foil sticks cleanly and you don't have an ugly bumpy texture once the copper is stuck down.
